294lbft is on the ragged edge of what a standard clutch can handle. High load and / or low vehicle momentum will make it slip. 4th gear up a hill and nailing it at 3000rpm is a good test.
It's only rated to 280lbft, well, the whole gearbox is actually, but the 'tolerances' VW built into it mean it can run more......on borrowed time.
A brand new standard clutch will handle it until a certain wear point and then it will slip again. Best bet is to fit a Helix and new DMF and forget about it. Rated to 350lbft, but can cope with 400 if push comes to shove.
If the gearbox is a pre-2007, you might want to check the end float on the gear shaft behind the plastic cover on the nearside casing. On some early gearboxes it's excessive and can cause clutch creep. VW sell a shim kit to rectify it and is a simple DIY procedure, but you do need some decent circlip pliers.
