this is a pin out for your usb
Pin   Name   Cable color   Description
1   VCC   Red   +5 VDC
2   D-   White   Data -
3   D+   Green   Data +
4   GND   Black   Ground
just remember that a usb is 5volts and will need a dropper or use a charging socket hidden behind the dash then it should work if useing an iphone then use a charging socket and fag lighter adapter :happy2:

Put one of these inline with a switched live:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-DC-Converter-Regulator-12V-Stepdown-to-5V-3A-15W-Car-Power-Supply-Module-New-/132073393406?hash=item1ec0300cfe:g:I9wAAOSwKtlWj3vu

That will take it down to 5V USB spec, otherwise you are chucking 12v straight down it which is why nothing is happening when you plug a phone in.

:signLOL:I just ordered one of those voltage drop units.
Thanks for the tip.
I'm going to try run a USB port to the drinks holder by the handbrake.
Iv always got my phone in there. It'll be handy to have the USB port there.

You do realise that the usb  socket shown in Bradh post above, snaps straight into one of the blank plugs in the cubby in front the gear stick? By the ESP and tyre pressure switches...gives a really neat OEM finish, for a few quid..

Linky...read it all before you decide on your approach.

I do. I have one to fit that blank switch space. But I don't want a charger cable coming from it. Looking for a neat cable rout option.

Slightly off topic but does anyone have a link handy for the same idea but one of the middle buttons? the button they offer is the far right one but I have the winter mode button there and I suspect the whole having an end button in the middle of a row would be annoying enough to be worth asking. Conversely if anyone has a link to the winter button for the middle would do, order of them is less important.
