Modified engine cover

Although loosing the engine cover to fit the Forge CIA & Catch can didnt really bother me I saw a second hand engine cover for sale and thought I'd have a go at cutting and fitting it.

Second hand cover.



dont need these bits.



Also retained the 2 front fixing points.



Had to make good the cut right hand end and formed a recess for a VW badge.



Ended up smoothing out all the edges and painted Satin black



I've seen somebody use the middle section of the engine cover on a new carbon cover so I tried this.



Think I prefer it with the white centre.





Another option was to wrap it in carbon which I could still do.

What do you think??

looks awesome neil. not a fan of not running the engine cover on the
eddy engine due to intakes!

I'd only change one thing and that would be to spray the lettering in silver to stand out a little from the white :happy2:

I wouldn't wrap it in CF as it may shrink/peel/bubble/wrinkle with the heat.

Looks great, Neil. Would look even more oem if you hadn't filled the moulded top.

I thought of doing the same but GTIjames very generously gave me his EVOMS which I'm repairing and am able to fit my carbon centre strip on.

If I don't like the result I'll do what you have except not fill it in. The oem cover, even just the top part, is surprisingly heavy.

Your post is a great guide for cutting down the stock cover and I probably wouldn't even have considered the EVOMS if I'd seen what you did earlier.

I'm going to be adapting an S3 engine cover to fit with my intake soon as well.  Just having a bit of trouble sourcing one at the moment.

I think different coloured lettering would make the letters stand out even more. Otherwise love the finish.

I have a roll of 2/2 Twill Carbon Fibre sheet (left over from another job) and high temp Resins good for 160 Degrees C, should be OK for Skinning a part in an engine bay.

The problem is a new engine cover is about £200, I got a second hand one for £50 but there going to be rare. Buy the time you add labour and parts its going to be dear.

I was thinking however that I could make a mould from what I've got and use it to laminate carbon fibre engine covers, I'd just have to work out how to fix them as you would have lost the OEM fixing points.
