Upgrading MFD2 to RNS-510
« on: December 24, 2008, 08:35:13 pm »
Hi all,
I'm upgrading my MFD2 DVD version to an RNS-510. I just want to make sure I've got everything I need to get started... some help/advice would be appreciated!
1) I've been informed said to me that as I had factory-fit MFD2 that I do not require the twin-jack FAKRA adaptor:

My MFD2 has got two (2) discrete wires with (2) FAKRA connectors... are these really "plug and play" or do I have to find this adaptor? I have a feeling I have to source an adaptor.

2) I am aware I need to change the AUX/CD ground connections as per this image:
http://img233.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img40412rg2.jpg

3) I'm concerned about the usability of my multifunction steering wheel. I have a very early model GTI with the following steering wheel buttons: Phone (pick up), Phone (disconnect), Mute, Change Source... Track next, Track previous, Volume up, Volume down. I hope that makes sense.
Anyway, in this post:
http://vwnavi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8029
This is suggested:
Quote
99% of the time, when the MFSW buttons do not work, you have a CAN-Gateway issue. You need to have at least an "F" gateway for the buttons to work with the RNS-510 if you have the buttons with only (1) phone icon. If you have (2) phone icons you need an "E". If you need to replace, get an "N" as this will incude the capability fo rear view camera and the media player.

Does this mean I need to change some physical  hardware in the car? If so, what part number is required and where is the device I am meant to change? Is it a straight swap?
earlier in that thread, this is suggested as well:

Quote
recode RNS510 multifunction steering whell On and later OFF, then it'll work.

How do I recode the RNS510? Do I need a VAG-COM? And which of the above is the definite answer?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

you need VAG com to reprogram, but you possbily wont ever notice if its not programmed (other than error codes you wont see), ps you dont have Soundack do you ?, when i changed mine i didnt get the two cable converters, i just removed the FAKRA plugs from the ends of my harness and they plugged straight into the RNS510, the older ones dont fit onto the new ones if you dont remove the Fakras as there to close together for the new unit (of far apart depending on how you look at it)

Thanks mate. I've gotten a good answer on VWNAVI as well... with any luck all my steering wheel controls will work, worst case need a bit of VAG work and a replacement of the CAN-gateway (which I want to avoid doing right now :P)

I'm going to have to replace the CAN-gateway soon anyway to latest version to get park sensor on RNS-510 but wasn't planning on doing that for a few months.

Well, it more or less all works - not all steering wheel buttons do. Volume up/Volume down and mute buttons work, but next track/previous track, phone pickup/disconnect and change source buttons don't work. I don't think this is a CAN issue... any thoughts?
I had a look at your RNS-510 thread on uk-mkvs 182_blue but you've got the newer wheel buttons than me.

VCDS?

Vag Com Diagnostic Service? (total guess)

Nope, I don't own a VAG-COM unit (yet) :/

Part of the long coding is to select MFSW installed.  I'm not saying that is the answer to your problem but it may be worth looking at.

VAG-COM is now branded VCDS.

Well, it'd be useful to see what's happening in any case. I believe MFSW is set as default but I'm not 100% sure. I'm wondering if there might be two MFSW settings too, as there are two different types of MFSW (my older type, and the newer type Golfs come with). It might sort out the compass too, as I know some vehicles come with a compass module (whereas mine does not); the RNS-510 might be looking for a compass signal rather than using its internal compass.

Anyway, this is all just speculation, any more thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming you bought your RNS used from the likes of eBay etc then the thought of any 'default' settings would be long gone.

There is only one option with regards to MFSW in the coding.

I got it from Tommy from the VWNAVI forums... I think he gets from the VW Czech factory but I'm not sure. You're probably right though that many of the defaults are gone... but why then do the volume up/volume down buttons work?

Most are refurbs.

there are a number of reasons why it may or may not work, there are different types of button it could also be the revision of MFSW steering wheel controller.

He was very good. I ordered on the 20th, a Saturday, I had the unit for Christmas Eve!
I'm very happy with the functionality, the MFD2 is very poor in comparison, and I rate the unit over the COMAND satnav that comes in the Merc S-Class (my dad has one so I'm reasonably familiar with it).
Can't wait to get started on other updates like the optical parking sensors and Bluetooth. There's a few things to do to the car to get it to work properly - I've still not had time to get it checked with VCDS to see about the next track/previous track MFSW buttons, but was able to get the twin antennae working properly by bypassing the Diversity box under the seat. I think once I get a CAN gateway "S" revision (same as on the Mk6) the MFSW buttons will work... and I'm planning on fitting a GTI VI wheel to the car anyway :P
