Intermittent Oil pressure light fault
« on: March 09, 2017, 11:53:05 pm »
Hey all, had the STOP oil pressure lights come on for me on 2 occasions now. the oil has been changed and the engines been flushed but it happened again. my mechanic tells me the engine is full of carbon and there is no cure. There must be a way to solve it as I don't want to part with my GTI.
I live in North Wales so if someone can guide me in the direction of someone that can help me out it would be very appreciated.

I'm really beginning to wonder too.. i have the sneaking suspicion he hasn't even had the sump off my car. so a trip to a different garage sump off for deep clean and inspection of the pick up pipe. There isn't a risk of damaging the oil pump if the oil pickup pipe is removed is there? I've spent 100's getting this car right due to been mistreated by a previous owner, I cant afford another hefty bill.

Removing the sump and inspecting/cleaning/replacing the oil pick up pipe is a nice straightforward job. No chance of damaging your oil pump. Any decent Mechanic should do it for you no problem. Maybe 2hrs labou plus the price of some sump sealant and the pick up tube itself which is nice and cheap.

I would be extremely wary of a mechanic who told you a low oil pressure warning light was related to carbon build up in the engine. That's just 100% bullsh*t and doesn't even make any sense?

Good luck with this mate :happy2:

I had the same issue around 6 months ago with the oil pressure light coming on and off then back on. Took my car to a locsl preformanec garage and they stripped my sump cleaned it out as it was in a bad way with gunk and sludge (even thought according to the service book it has always been serviced on time). The Oil filter was that badly blocked it had started being pulled through, however after a good clean and a full service car seemed to be running well. The issue was caused by previous owners mixing and using cheap oil low grade oil however the oil pump is still making great pressure.

If the rest of the car is in good shape, throwing another engine into it wouldn't be the end of the world.  It is a service item after all, with a finite lifespan.  If people like their car enough, it's certainly an option, and inevitable if you keep it long enough.

The problem with direct injection is it burns a lot more of the fuel compared to port injection, thereby you get a lot more carbon in the exhaust.  Look at the tailpipe tips!  I've seen some badly tuned TFSIs with soot covering the back of the car too.
A lot of that carbon gets into the oil via blow by, which forms sludge, so the mechanic was technically correct.  As these engines age, the only way to keep them clean internally is to change the oil frequently because as the rings / cylinders wear out, the blow by gets worse, compounding the problem.

Drop the sump, clean/replace the pick up pipe carry on.  But get it done asap because every time you see that stop light, bearings are momentarily running dry.

Some get to see that light once and the bang goes the engine so as per recommendation get it off and get it checked as you can even see if it's been removed yourself as there will be fresh sealant around the edge of the sump.

Dodgy mechanic carbon and oil pressure  :signLOL: change mechanic No1 priority

I'll see if I'm trouble free for a few weeks before I feel I'm truly out the woods haha
