Indicator 'daylight' running lights...MOT failure!
« on: March 10, 2017, 02:00:58 pm »
Hi All,

Just heard today that my Mk5 has failed its MOT because the indicators are set as 'daylight' running lights (45% glow), although the same garage passed it last year with them.

They mentioned you can't have amber lights showing on the front...have the laws changed or something?

Gonna have to get VDCS plugged in and set everything back to standard! :sad1:

45% is quite bright, most have it set to 15-20%

Buy an eBay cable and reprogram the drl to 00 and then change it back when it's got the MOT. Same story over here with the NCT.

Thanks Zip...got a mate with the kit, so lucky enough that I dont need to buy anything. Will get it sorted over the weekend, just thought it strange everything was fine last MOT and they pick it up this year.

Had been thinking of turning them off anyway as the missus doesnt like them when shes driving it!

45%...if you're gonna do it, make it seen!

That's sad to hear mate, mine are set on 40% but looks a little too bright so going to knock um down to 20%

Do mine too, don't know what they're set at at the moment though
thought you were going to buy a vagcom and do everything yourself as you seem to know everything else :angry015:  :signLOL:

A lot of volvos and older bmw 5 series have front amber lights on. Think you must have just had a tester who didn't know.

I have a MK5 GTI and it comes with factory fitted xenon headlights. How do i go about getting the DRL's on? Is there a guide. I also have access to vagcom so im ok in that area.

Turns out its not the fact they are on, but that the opposite indicator light doesnt go off when the other is signalling when sidelights are on.

News to me that is an MOT failure, but I do see where the 'safety' aspect comes in and it could be confusing for other road users

I had my mot 6 months ago with them on.

I tried to turn them off before in the car park but laptop died on me. I thought it would be mentioned but passed with no advisories.

Mine got through MOT last week with Daylights on, think mate set them to around 25%. I was going to get him to disable for the MOT but forgot to ask him so was kind of expecting it to fail.

Tried this on mine and to be honest I don't think they look good. As someone else said certain volvos have amber lights and I can think of more than one occasion where I've misinterpreted the driver's intention. Worst that has happened is I failed to let them out in heavy traffic but that's enough for me to think they're kind of unsafe?

Can't help but think if our cars had them on from the factory we'd all be rushing to turn them off for a cleaner look

As far as I'm aware these only come on when you switch the dimmed lights on? Or am I missing a trick?

I think they look good on xenons - I have them set at 25% on mine.

It someone's blinking it's wanting to come out as I've never had an issue with them even back in the late 80's I've seen mk1-2 escorts with them running

That's ridiculous...all BMW 5-Series and Range Rovers have Amber drls so he must be failing a lot of cars...only cos VW golfs traditionally don't have Amber lights, doesn't mean it should fail..I can only assume it's cos theyre 40%....mine pass fine with 25%.
