Wheel Bearing Front
« on: March 20, 2017, 06:55:14 pm »
Got a quote today for Drivers Side Front Wheel Bearing replacement... said it needs to the whole hub and would cost £238 including... ( Edit: TOTAL JOB PRICE, SUPPLY AND FIT, GEN PARTS )

Can't the bearing be replaced without changing the Hub?

If not, is that a fair price for supplying and fitting a new hub with Genuine Parts?

Unfortunately it does have to be the whole hub that's replaced.

Something like 60 or 80 quid for the hub/bearing (sure you can get cheaper ones off ebay but I probably wouldn't...) plus 2 to 3 hours labour at something like 50 or 60 quid an hour then your quote sounds about right.

Chris
It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Cheers Chris, hmm, suppose I could call around for a few more prices, but I have a feeling it's going to be around the same.  Going to be a pricey month, four new tyres, discs/pads all round, rear calipers, service and this wheel bearing... ouch.

Thanks for your input (y)

Ouch indeed...

Always worth getting quotes from a few places.

From memory when I looked through the old paperwork for my car a rear VW bearing was around £130, can't remember if the fronts were the same, can check for you if you like.

If it's anything like the rears, it takes 45 mins at tops to change.
Front wheel bearing off ECP is circa £90 - £110 dependent on brand you go for.

That's extortion and I personally wouldn't pay that for a hub from the stealers as Eurocarparts will do the same job for half that price tbh.

Just be careful though.....if you buy cheap, you'll probably get speed sensor / abs fault.

It is really common problem with 'spurious' bearings / hubs fitted.  Not made to same high standard.

I think here, I would only use genuine!
VW Golf 2.0 Gtd 140 4motion (2005)
Factory fitted: xenons, sunroof, heated leather seats, fold in mirrors with downlights,
Custom: Mk6 steering wheel, updated gateway, RNS510 remote boot pop, LED lighting.

I bought a hub from eurocarparts for half the price. Then I returned it and bought a genuine one for full price (£130). Difference being the eurocarparts hub (lucas) gave abs and other associated errors. Euros not bad for some things, but not our hubs!

You can buy SKF or FAG. Both make the genuine hubs. Cheaper and same quality. I have a friend that bought a SKF and it had the VW branding too.

I should've written that better, it is £238 fitted (using gen parts).

Had a quote from VW themselves, they wanted £359 fitted.

Had another quote with pattern part from VW Specialist for £150 fitted.

Thanks for the response guys

It's going in tomorrow, so I want to see the invoice of the part I'm paying for, I think it's only fair....

Brands to look out for ?  SKF ?

Cheers
