Michelin PSS vs Goodyear Asym 3

So it turns out I need two new tyres. Currently have MPSS which I found to not be a good as I was hoping. This might have been down to the subframe moving, shot dampers or a combination of the two.

Has anyone tried both these tyres and how did you find them?

I know these seem to be the main 2 tyres fitted by people with mk5's.

I have just fitted  good year asy 3 and they are very good...if I was doing the odd track day then maybe the Michelin but what I use my credit car for i couldnot justify the price

Full set of GY Assy 3 on mine - very capable tyres especially on Lincolnshire's shot roads!

Not a GTI but I'm running PSS on my C63 and although they are good in the dry they offer little grip in the wet. I'd say the OE conti 5's were over all better.

Ran assy2 on my M5 and v good all rounder tbh.. I'd go assy3

Pilot Sport 4 is a great all rounder and my preferred choice over the Asy3 and a few others. Never tried the PSS as my car is a daily family car and not suited to the more track focussed PSS or similar tyres. Don't get me wrong the Asy3 is a good tyre but I would go for the PS4 every time. Dry traction of the PS4 is especially good

I've found PS4 to be better than F1v2 (no idea about v3) but PSS were IMO better than PS4.

It's impossible to state matter of factly that one tyre is better than another.  Anything that governs how the car feels to drive (tyres, suspension, brakes etc) is totally subjective and therefore people need to try different things and draw their own conclusions.

As far as completely standard suspension goes, the PS4 feels superb.  I like the consistency, I like the self centering strength and off centre feel, and I like the cornering grip and stability.  Michelin have pulled a blinder with this tyre.
It's the best tyre I've ever tried on a VW.....and I've had lots of VWs....and lots of tyres.

Different tyres have different traits on different cars, hence why OEs fit a particular brand and model at the factory, but there's a good reason why a lot of high performance German cars come fitted with Michelins as standard.

I hate wasting money and wouldn't spend on something i haven't done any research on. Just nice to get other people opinions who may have tried alternatives and can somewhat compare even though, as you say you have to take into account the variables between cars.

I have Eagle F1's and they are perfect for my driving. they are quite grippy.

Saying that I dont drive like a loon on public roads plus ive got all the bolt ons but not mapped yet so may be different for you

Nobody likes wasting money but you can't guarantee anything car related is going to be money well spent ahead of time.  If your choice turns out to be a duff one, notch it down to experience and move on.

In what way were the PSS not what you were expecting, just to get some context?

Given that you are possibly getting rid soon I wouldn't worry too much about getting the 10/10ths best tyre. I'd got for the cheapest of the aforementioned tyres

So wind the clock back a few years to when I first started adding the mods. I set up I found really good, for me was, H&R springs, standard dampers, SALK and RARB. Tyres then were Hankook Ventus V12's. When new handling felt sharp with tons of grip but deteriorated as soon as tread depth disappeared.

So back to current day once the Hankook's were done I gave the MPSS's a try and from new never felt as good as the Hankook's did. Now this is where the issues I noted in my first post may have played a part. Worn stock dampers affecting the handling and the subframe moving gave a very vague feel to  the drive along with, I think, prematurely wearing the two front tyres.

I don't mind giving something else a go but do enjoy a spirited drive from time to time as my commute to work is mostly twisty A roads.

Given that you are possibly getting rid soon I wouldn't worry too much about getting the 10/10ths best tyre. I'd got for the cheapest of the aforementioned tyres

I know what you're saying mate but when I say getting rid soon this could be another 2 years yet. House move will come first sometime next year before I even contemplate taking out any sort of finance

FYI various KwikFit centres are having sales on at the moment. My mate is manager in one of the stores that has a 50% sale on tomorrow, and I'm picking up a a spare pair of PS4 (225/40/18) to chuck in my shed for UNDER £100 for the pair

The Ventus V12 is a good tyre to be fair.  PSS does need a bit of heat in it to perform at it's best, but maybe it just didn't suit your setup as well as the V12s did.

My OE dampers are 110K old and my subframe moves around a bit, but tbh the PS4s still put in a good performance and feel consistent.

@Dan_FR that's a cracking deal. I've just rang my local Kwik Fit and they only have 25% off promo at the minute so looking at £200 for a pair of PS4's.
