New brakes

Good afternoon, just noticed my front pads are very low and as my discs are a bit tatty will take the opportunity to change the lot. Was going to take advantage of the EPC discount weekend however on looking it says there are two fitments for my car? Can anyone point me in the right direction, car is 2007 07 gti all standard. Cheers

You want 312mm discs, and associated pads. Click in the description or 'fitment details' and you should be able to suss what you need.

Worth noting, I bought some Pagid 340mm discs off ECP (for a 7R/PP upgrade) and they're crap. Either that, or the Pagid pads. Or both.

If you can stretch to dealer parts I'd recommend it.

Yeah pagid are good. They don't really rust as much as most of the other brands.

Ive never really had a problem with any pagid stuff ive fitted to mainstream cars, they are probably not as good as everyone thinks but seem reasonable quality for most applications. I did hear they were ecp own brand these days.
They are part of the Tmd friction group which also makes mintex and textar.
Id probably look towards the brembo stuff ecp sells for the Gti although i do hate using them as the sales are a joke.

I heard something similar - that ECP had bought the rights to the Pagid brand. And that some Pagid branded stuff is made in China. Not that all things made in China are crap, but you expect something else when you buy Pagid.

Anyway, it didn't stop me buying Pagid discs and pads from ECP (using the 'how bad can they be?' logic), and sure enough I found out how bad they were.

I'm not ruling out operator error - there's a chance I did something wrong when they were bedding in - but I didn't treat them any differently to any new discs and pads I'd had in the past. And these aren't fancy pads with specific bedding-in procedures required, just standard spec kit.

I now have a big wobble if I brake hard from speed. Whether it's pad deposits, or the discs are actually warped, I don't know, but I'll need to get them skimmed and hope it does the trick. The brakes function very well at lower speeds, it's just when 'hauling it in' I have the issue.

Currently have Pagid pads on my GTI with no issues, does the job in normal road driving and works well from cold. Though if you plan to do some spirited driving or track days then that's probably where the pads will be out of their depth.

I'm switching over to Brembo pads and Max Discs next week as I'm upgrading to a Porsche NQSBBK setup, should make a very interesting comparison.

IIRC @Rich83 had a bad experience with some Brembo pads. Not saying you'll have issues but he might be able to advise somewhat.

It's a bit of a minefield!

The NQSBBK sounds a good option @PatchySan although I was always put off by the idea of staying with 312mm discs. As in, can they deal with the heat effectively? It is a proven upgrade though, so if your discs and pads are good quality I'm sure you'll have success. And you'll save a fair bit of weight over the bigger kits!

One thing I forgot to mention about the 340/345mm setups - I've heard from quite a few people now who have had problems with wobble (deposits/warping/whatever) with the older R32/S3 setup. As mine is essentially the same, but a revision of that (7R/PP and 340mm discs), I wonder if there's something inherent in the design of a large single piston caliper that makes it vulnerable to these issues. Balance with the carrier or something. I dunno, I'm just thinking aloud. Although there are undoubtedly thousands of cars on the road with the same setup from the factory that don't have the problem.

I just bought some MTEC disks with Mintex pads as they ended up being cheaper than ecp and the like. I've used them before on my other cars and had no issues (you can also choose the disk design as well and get them coated in gold or black for rust resistance)

I'd recommend the R32 set up as I've seen them up close today and my gosh those calipers are huuuuge  :surprised: was an S3 but same set up and worth the money  :grin:

Thank you all for the replies and the R32 set up offer but staying standard for now thanks. I will call tmrw but any ideas how much brake bits are from dealers?
