Needing Some Information and Help Buying Golf GT
« on: May 10, 2017, 06:39:33 pm »
Hello,

I'm wondering if I can get some help and information regarding a certain Golf GT that has recently appeared close to where I live.
I'm looking on purchasing a diesel 140 or 170 TDI and have stumbled across the following which looks interesting:

Gumtree 'Golf GT TDI 170 6 Speed Gearbox':
https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/golf-gt-tdi-170bhp-6speed-gearbox-long-mot/1239108762

Now the car looks in good condition from the pictures even though it may need a clean but I've stumbled across some information which has confused me to say the least.

The car was originally listed in the advert as a 'TDI 140' until I informed the owner about the mistake and he's recently updated the listing with new information saying it's now a 'TDI 170'. The bit I'm actually confused about is some insurance and vehicle information websites are listing it as a 'TDI 140' in checks and some websites are listing as a 'TDI 170'.

I'm also inclined to believe after doing some research that the 'TDI 170' wasn't released until June 2006/7 which has gotten me confused about a 2005 'GT TDI 170'. Another warning sign I've seen is the car hasn't been taxed since July 2016 which is when the current owner acquired it.

Some weird stuff to say the least but the insurance does make a different between a 140 and a 170 so I'm wondering if these warning signs should mean I should stay away or is there something I'm missing altogether?

I would really like to hear anyone's feedback about the situation and look forward to reading the replies :drinking:
Cheers.

The one in the picture is a 140.  :happy2:

That car is too old to be a 170 and The 170 had the facelift front end. If the seller doesn't know what their own car is then I would probably avoid it... It just throws up red flags to me about how the car has been maintained etc... it might be fine but I personally wouldn't risk it, there are so many golfs out there, go for one that has a good history.

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Yeah I was thinking it was a 140 myself due to the differences between the older and face-lifted models. I'll probably stay away from it as there's too many red flags to question the owner with.
I still can't get over the insurance and vehicle checking companies stating the vehicle is a 'TDI 170' peculiar to say the least

Cheers for the quick reply Chris! :happy2:

Strange indeed...

The engine cover in the engine bay picture points to it being a 140 too. The grammar in the advert would be enough to put me off going to look at it... Maybe that's just me though.
