Revo Induction Kit
« on: June 02, 2017, 03:38:01 pm »
So I purchased a Revo Induction kit for the ol' Mk5 GTI and had it all fitted.

Now, I didn't get this using the standard engine cover filter.
But when I accelerate over 2k and let off the throttle I get a high pitched EEEEEK noise.
Happens every time under acceleration.

When idle, and I rev the car over 2k, I get the normal TSSSSSS sound.

Any ideas?

PS: I don't have a stage 1 yet.

Yeah it's a common annoying problem with the standard k03 gti's. The k04 boys don't have the same issue.

Usually the k03 resonance (like an out of tune flute?) is heard under load, ie when you're on the throttle.

It's pretty much confirmed that it's down to the DV being right next to the turbo on k03 cars, rather than up at the front like k04 cars. It's not the aftermarket intake itself that makes the noise - more that the OEM engine cover manages to mute it.

There are options for getting rid of the noise. One is relocating the DV to the front like on a k04 car (I'm in the middle of that myself), another is going full k04 (that same relocation job is part of the k04 conversion), and there's a theory that simply swapping the OEM DV for a GFB DV+ (no relocation) gets rid of the noise, although I'm not sure on that.

It's worth clarifying exactly what's going on with your car though @killarag

I get the resonance/flute/goose honk myself (Ramair kit) but like I said, it's under load (on boost). When I lift off from load I get a nice 'tisshh'.

It could be we're talking about two different things here. There are vids knocking about where you can hear the resonance I'm talking about - hopefully someone can link/upload one so you can compare with yours. You might have a vacuum leak that causes your 'EEEEEK'!

It it quite difficult to describe. It's not like a scream or anything.

It is as you say like a high pitch peep from a flute but I get the tssshhh after.
I have been told it is back pressure? Whatever that means (not overly savvy with turbo related things  :signLOL: )

I was lucky enough not to get this noise on my k03 when I fitted a revo not sure if I was a lucky one but I removed it as I found it too loud. I since fitted a DV+ and a VWR intake and still don't get the noise thankfully.

Odd, could it be the forge recirc valve?

When you say moving the recirc valve to the top of the engine.
Is there a how to for this? I would be interested in doing this as the noise is slightly annoying.

Search for 'DV relocation' or 'diverter valve relocation'. Also the last wanted thread I created has lots of info.

But... ascertain whether it's definitely the same issue first. It's a few quid to spend if it's not the solution you want.

Ive got the pcv delete plate coming in the post. Went to inters yesterday and got it free with a stage 1

Ill fit that first and check all my pipe work for splits.

Ive ran vagcom on the car and only one engine fault in regards to charcoal canister

I feel really stupid writing this, but I may have sourced the problem!!!!

So, I went out to lunch today and done a complete once over the induction kit installation.
Now, everything at a glace looked okay... however, I noticed a jubilee clip missing.

Where the Induction Kit's metal pipe work meets the silicone hose fitted to the turbo, I noticed a little bung in the silicon pipe. I could twist it and pull it out with ease!
I thought to myself, surely that isn't right?

So I scoured the internet looking at other engine bays with Revo Induction Kits on, and they all have this jubilee clip on.

I can't say for sure this will cure the problem but it is worth a try.

 that's the K04 dv hose relocation pipe and I'm sure me and AJP have had a conversation about this goose honk related noise when I fitted my RamAir in the poor little K03!! I don't even hear it now but will double check on that one  :signLOL:

Yeah the Revo intake is 'universal' so on a k04 car the DV hose would plumb into where that bung/plug is. Not sure what the deal is with my Ramair... I don't remember seeing a blank so I'm guessing it's k03 specific?

As for the goose honk...! It's definitely more noticeable the more boost you're running. And it's definitely under boost (full throttle) rather than vacuum (lift off).

@killarag is on stock map, and says he gets this noise on lifting off. This makes me wonder whether his issue isn't the same as I'm experiencing.

Yeah it was definitely under boost when I experienced this noise but can't remember if it makes the noise now. I know I get a whoosh noise on lift off so will have to take it for a spirited drive to test it for this noise again.

My RamAir is K03-K04 as it has the bung but I ordered mine specifically for the K04 dv relocation and maybe the reason it makes a noise but without having standard pipe to do back to back testing we won't know.

Yeah so when I accelerate hard and then lift off, where the tshhh should be heard, i get the flute noise.

I got a stage one over the weekend at Inters and the noise is a bit louder (Grrrr)

Also, I put a jubilee clip on the bung and I still get the noise!

Looks like I am investing in the relocation kit :(

Have you checked you dv for splitting?
