OK - simple question. Speaker sizes.....
« on: February 03, 2010, 08:08:16 pm »
Been offered some 6.5" speakers. Will they go in the Golf? My understanding is that this is a 16.5cm speaker. So, I'll need either MDF spacers or the Autoleads ones....

IF they do, I've also got the speaker depth - just under 6cm.

Will they go in the front doors without smashing the windows when they're down?

Thoughts ASAP

165 and 6.5 are the same size. Metric v Imperial.

OEM mid-bass drivers in Golf 5 have 180mm. Most car-audio manufacturers use 165mm (16.5 drivers). You will need an MDF ring for accomodating the new 165mm driver and it will also improve sound quality by better vibration control as opposed to the OEM plastic adapters !

I'm not happy with the auto leads adapters I really wish I used MDF.

Another thing you should take into acount regarding mk5 acoustics. Unfortunately, the location of the mid-bass driver towards the rear of the door is the worst possible as puting the 2 drivers in a colinear position with your head/years would yield phase problems. No matter how expensive and good the aftermarket drivers would be, you will never get ptoper low frequency response until you relocate the driver towards the front of the door (of course this means modifying the entire door panel and plastic face) !

yeh, not too worried about the 6.5" driver position (speaker, not teeny weeny person!   ) - got a rather nice sub going in the wheel arch, so bass is addressed.....

Looking at the Autoleads adapters - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK5-FRONT-DOOR-SPEAKER-ADAPTOR-SAK-3108_W0QQitemZ250410479620QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_FasciaPlates_SM?hash=item3a4da0b004(only £13)

How much for some MDF ones?

D'Oh! I'm not actually thinking this one through!  :stupid:

Firstly, a BIG thanks to Luke at Plush. And to GTI Jal for the link.

Now, I work at a rather pleasant FE college..... with a woodwork department..... with a lovely lecturer called Colin...... who runs the woodwork department.... with a fantastic chap called Nigel...... we play Golf together........ see where this is going?

I can get some offcuts of MDF and the rest is history really  :happy2:

BUT again, a BIG thanks to those who've offered their services and advice  :happy2:

Now, one final thing - fixing the spacers to the door?  Recommendations?

The doors will also be sound-proofed

Better go to a car-audio shaop and have them custom made on your car and with your drivers !

Well, an update for you - brought the speakers to work today and got measuring up for my MDF spacers (I've got full access to a woodwork shop!)....

So the old VW "bass" driver is 180mm in diameter.

Got out my tape measure to check the diameter of the new drivers......

And they're the same!!

Soooo...... all I'm going to do, as these are a little bit deeper, is make some rings up (identical diameter) and use some thin MDF just to bring the driver out a bit. (The voice coil area is 60mm, compared to VW's 55mm)

LOL - the virtues of buying all this kit, putting it away and forgetting about it!!

What drivers are those ? Most use 165mm. 180mm is a standard for home-audio drivers usually. If you can, use 20mm MDF to better dampen the vibrations of the driver. The more rigid the area holding the driver, the more music you'll hear instead of vibrations adding to the sound ! This would translate into crispier and cleaner sound !
