Car not starting after AMP install?
« on: August 14, 2017, 11:41:18 am »
Hi,

Installed a sub woofer and AMP in my car and I know I did it properly as I done it a hundred times and checked everything over before I started the car.. What happened was I finished installing it and then started the car... It started up and ran for 2-3 seconds then power started draining out and it shut off again. Then tried it again and it did the same thing only it shut off quicker than before. I thought okay the head unit turns on when ignition is on and the amp turns on (remote wire is connected to fuse box on ignition live) and if the music is playing the sub woofer starts booming as normal (this is before the car is started). Then I try to start it and it runs but cuts out.. I thought okay maybe the battery is bad seeing as it has a black dot on it which indicated a bad battery. I then thought let me take the AMP remote wire off again and charge up the battery using trickle charge and I had left it for around 30 minutes and then tried to start and this time it just kept cranking but not starting. I then got worried and tried to jump start it with another car using jump leads and it still doesn't start!! Sounds like it cranks but it will not start now. Is this a bad battery? I have problems when first starting the car it would take a few cranks before it starts up so maybe the battery has now completely died out on me at the wrong time?.. The AMP remote wire is connected to a fuse in the fuse box that is in the car near the driver side and I took them all out to check if anything blew but they all seem fine. I removed the AMP remote cable from the fuse and tried without it so the amp cant be the issue but it still cranks but doesnt start. The headunit powers up fine and plays music as normal but the car just doesnt start?  What could it be?

Car is a MK5 Edition 30 Stage 2

Thank You.

I'd say it's not directly caused by your audio install. More likely you knocked an electrical connector or sensor when you were installing it. From what you describe I'd say it's a fueling issue, or ignition of the fuel (Coil Packs) Can you get a VCDS scan, that'll likely point you in the right direction.

It could of course just be a coincidence it happened after you installed your amp.

Thanks for your reply.. Bingo.. Left the car to trickle charge for 3 hours.. Came back and still sounds like cranking but not running.. So put the VCDS on like you said and got this error code...

01259 - Fuel Pump Relay (J17)

01259 - Fuel Pump Relay (J17): Open or Short to Ground
Possible Causes
Wiring/Connectors from/to Fuel Pump Relay (J17) faulty
Fuel Pump Relay (J17) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Fuel Pump Relay (J17)
Check Fuel Pump Relay (J17)

Errrrrrrr where do i start and do I have to drop my pants to fix it? :(

I've this fault code too but my car starts. I was told that the relay may be the "167" located in the engine bay fuse box....haven't tried replacing mine but maybe have a butchers in yours?

Thanks for the reply.. I just dont understand what the cause for this to break is.. All I did was hook up a sub woofer and AMP which I done plenty of times but never had this issue.. Is it just my bad luck that the relay wanted to break while I was installing my audio system and it left me puzzled thinking its my fault that I broke something or have I actually done something for the relay to break??

I have took the relay off #167 and think I will just replace it from eurocarparts before they close

Have just replaced the fuel pump relay and still the same thing. Cranks but doesnt run.. It was number 167 in the engine bay but that hasnt done any thing when replaced.. The AMP earth is connected to the seat belt holder clasp with a big bolt through it so it is secure... The power cable is a 0 gauge going to the battery and it is fused... The remote wire is going to a fuse in the fuse box on the side of the driver side.. This was checked first to make sure it only turns on when ignition is on. The AMP is a hefty 2000watt (kenwood kac 9106d) AMP therefore I keep looking at the car battery thinking it might be the problem but I dont have a spare to try first :( What else could it be.. The fuses inside the car and in the engine bay are all fine, dont look blown and they have continuity so what else could it be

Is it just the amp install you did? Did you do speakers also?

Just throwing it out there, the fuel pump is primed by the drivers door being opened, did you have the door cards off at all? Iirc the door control module is used to prime the pump, did you go near the wiring?

Fixed it... Dont ever fix a car while your half asleep!!!!! -___- Finished work 7.30am and stayed awake all day fixing it so had half a brain if that ... I had took the fuel pump fuse out and placed it in a different slot!!!!! The new battery I tried did feel like it was giving the car much more power to start so I think my current battery is knackered too but I think I can make some use of it for now and see if it causes any problems. Now I just need to find out why the bloody hell the bass is louder/deeper on low volume and goes softer on high volume!!! -_- Technology aye.. Thank you for all your help guys..Stupid me I guess.. Lesson learnt, Dont fix things half asleep.

What fuse was it, need to check mine

According to ye ol' internet and the manual, it's number 27, 15 amp, but that slot is empty on mine and it starts fine

Ta
I'll see what I have in 27 and go from there...
If not I'll just start pulling all the 15's to see what they do

I had just finished a night shift before I started the job.. Wasnt thinking straight and some how put the fuse back in the wrong slot.. So the car initially started up for 2-3seconds and got rid of the fuel that was already in the system and then wouldnt start back up again.. Silly me haha.. Now I got another problem with this stupid audio setup where the bass constantly stays the same no matter what the volume is on! -_-
