Engine fan going beserk

My wife pulled on to the drive tonight in my car (mk5 GTi Pirelli) and the engine fan was going full blast, so much that I could hear it in the house. Sat in the car and noticed the front screen mister was turned and also the A/c button was on. Started the car and the fan came on big time again in the engine

I turned off the A/c button and it all calmed down again. Hit the A/c button and it went mad again

The car had only done a short journey

Will take it in to be looked at but anyone know what it is likely to be. It has never done that before. Sounded like the fan would have exploded if it kept going

The lads here recently diagnosed mine with the same issue.

Mine does it once in a blue moon so I'm leaving it for now and I'll tackle it next time I'm doing work around that area.

That's really helpful thanks, sounds like the A/c fan is faulty and the car is defaulting to the main fan when the A/c button is pressed in the car. I will just avoid using the aircon until it goes in for a service in December. I have religiously taken it to VW Kettering every year since new for a service as always had great service and are pretty reasonable. I will let them diagnose the full fault for me
