So got to my car the other day and had 2 flat tyres. Limped to the petrol station to whack some air in, one stayed up the other was leaking from the rim. I’d had a few slippy slide moments in the weather so used it as an excuse to replace 3 of them. One was a worn kumho, the other was a land sail and I can’t even remember the other one, it’s clear the previous owner couldn’t give a crap about the car so feels good that I have rescued it, it will want for nothing from now on.
So with 4 new tyres it was grippy again, still another £225 lighter! Drove down to ikea and the temp gauge which sits on halfway in traffic went straight down and wouldn’t come back up until I was stuck in traffic and the smell of fuel was so bad I had to drive with the windows down and defrost the kids when I got home.
Assumed it was the car overfuelling thinking it was cold. New temp sensor was ordered, couldn’t get a genuine one in time so went for a gates version which turned out to be a genuine one with the vw Audi logo scrubbed off, bonus. So now I have much better mpg and a temp sensor that sits halfway. Still ended up costing £172 fitted and a very cranky mechanic as it was such a fiddly job.
The petrol smell is coming from a leak under the back seat where the fuel tank is, mechanic reckons I might need to replace the fuel tank, anyone had this before? I’ve had to replace the temp sensor on every golf I’ve owned but never had a leak from the top of the fuel tank? I’ll just have to make sure I keep the tank half full for now and see if it is that?
Next job is to replace the stereo, I’m swapping the standard one for the same with silver buttons, I forget the code? All these issues with battery drain is something I can do without. I take it the silver button version won’t cause any issues? Also is it easy enough to get the codes for them? I’ve been reading about going to the dealers or getting them off the internet?
