2005 AXX Stop engine light
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:59:58 am »
Last year I changed the oil pickup pipe and cam chain and tensioner on my GTI due to the guides breaking off the tensioner and blocking the pick up pipe causing the low oil pressure light to come on.

It's been fine for nearly a year until yesterday when the Stop engine light came on while giving it some welly. I swiftly turned the engine off and pulled into a layby. Upon briefly restarting, the top end sounded quite rattley so I phoned my old man and got it towed back home.

It's been running perfectly since I changed the pickup pipe and tensioner etc so why has it started playing up now? Has the oil pump gone? Or has the pickup blocked again? I only just serviced it a few weeks ago too  :sad1:

I'm going to remove the sump at the weekend and take a look, if the pickup is clean I suspect the oil pump has gone? In which case I will probably just sell the bloody thing!

Wouldn't just do anything rash mate it's the drive cog that goes on the pump which can be purchased on the Bay for around £40 , that is if no other engine damage has been done before hand flush the engine well Back on with the rebuilt oil pump and you might just get away with it ...

Hopefully it is something that simple but I'm not sure. Guess I will find out soon!

Out of interest, what's your mileage, what make and viscosity oil do you use and how often is it changed?
Without traction power is nothing!

97K, looking at the car history it was on longlife service till about 40K then went on to annual service intervals. I believe it's the early history of the car which is what has caused these issues.

Since I have owned it (just over a year) I have been solely using Quantum Platinum 5w40 and I suspect it's the additives and more frequent oil changes (every 5K) which has caused the bits of carbon lining the engine to break off and block the pick up pipe.

After clearing it this time, I ran some flushing oil through it and let it idle for 30 mins. Then put the decent oil in, I'm hoping this will be the end of the crap that's been in the engine!
