Today was stationary in traffic and all of a sudden engine was about to cut out and stall. It didn't stall, and I was able to drive home safely at low revs. It sounded weird and not lile a smooth gti engine sound. It stryggled to pull. The car also has a dump valve that hisses, and sounded pretty faint to me as I was driving. The engine now sounds like a moped or motorcycle. Engine shuddering, engine management light flashes and then goes away! Is this an exhaust/cat conv issue or blown or is ita  more engine related issue? Have Audi R8 coil packs and NGK spark plugs that are recommended for my car. Car feels like it is loosing breath and wants to stall. Not picking up speak!

Anyone have a clue what this could be as I dong want to drive it and do it any damage?

I'm worried about driving it in this state, is it OK to drive to a garage, might breakdown.

Judging by what you said it either sounds like a misfire or coil packs..seems like a common thing to go on these engines now there getting on with age

Watch this YouTube video: the problem I have with my car as described above: Exactly the same noise and engine vibration in car is being felt:

Is it now an injector problem I'm faced with or carbon build up? Going to start with coils and spark plugs as previously spark plugs had carbon build up but engine was not shaking and shuddering like the youtube video suggests that is now the case  :scared:

I had the exact issue on my Leon TSI last week- all dealt with.

What happened was the Mass air flow sensor stopped working and instructed the O2 sensor to throw in extra fuel which ruined the spark plugs and coil pack (in cylinder 1). if diagnostic doesnt pick up the mass air flow and O2 sensor. Just change the spark plugs (as they would be clogged) and the coil packs (All four is recommended) - this solved the issue.

Also if you notice the engine choking up and stalling after filling up fuel or starting up after a brief stop then that is the same symptoms i had

i am pretty sure this will solve the issue from what you described.
i also did an engine treatment using sea foam for extra measure (12.99 off eBay)

hey Zigz, thanks for that. VW don't tell you these things when you go into their showrooms. Had it diagnosed and was showing misfire on cylinder 2! My mechanic he removed the coil and checked the spark plug and noticed black carbon and slightly wet. He said the coil was causing the misfire and spark plug become void for that reason. I was using red Audi R8 coils and replaced just the one coil with genuine VW coil this time (not all four). Not going to go for anymore aftermarket because the drive is much better with genuine parts I find on my GTI.I've heard main dealers they diagnose all sorts of problems in an an attempt to rake up the bill so high which my mechanic he seems is a rip off.
Going to use fuel injecter cleaner swell next time I fill up petrol because these engines do build up carbon that causes the engine to choke unfortunately. As soon as you pass 70,000 on clock these problems become an issue and its important to counter them from being persistent! :happy2:

Glad you got it sorted! isn't the R8 coils suppose to be like an upgrade i was thinking of getting them as my next mod.... might need to reconsider now.

Yes they are a good upgrade but it would seem the ones I bought off Ebay weren’t the genuine ones from VW dealers but fake ones. The genuine ones should have the VAG number on the top not on the side.

R8 coils are not an upgrade. Just red. And possibly cheaper than the mk5 part.
