Edition 30 - DSG Vs Manual?
« on: November 28, 2017, 06:20:29 pm »
Apologies, I'm sure this has been asked in the past but I'm trying to make a decision

I'm on the lookout for an edition 30 and I really fancy the dsg box, on one hand it should be great fun and on the other, auto mode sat in city centre traffic will make my commute easier.

Sadly, googling mk5 dsg takes me to loads of threads discussing problems, in reality how reliable / unreliable are they? What are the common faults and the usual costs to rectify?

What's the general opinion on the better car? Dsg or manual?

Thanks :)

One factor to bear in mind is whether you plan on tuning the car as the manual may soon need the clutch replacing with an upgraded unit.  Not only is this quite expensive however you will also end up with a heavier pedal. DSG otoh can easily accommodate via software tweaks.

Neither gearbox is perfect, but both are strong and long lasting.

DSG is great in manual mode with auto upshift is mapped out, but the lag in auto mode isn't for me.  They still haven't got that right in the MK7.5.

Best thing to do is try both and see which you prefer.  You shouldn't base a purchase on internet opinions.  We don't have to live your decision, you do!

If in doubt, go for the manual.  Moving cogs ourselves has served us well for decades and you know what to expect.  Simple engineering is a security blanket when you just want things to work for the daily commute.

132k on my DSG and it still works perfectly fine. DSG box has serviced on time - which helps I suppose!

I wouldn’t ever go back to a manual - but that’s my opinion.

Like others have said better to drive them for yourself as you will have to live with the car not us!

If I get another VAG, it will be DSG next.....but saying that, the ZF 8 speed in the BMWs is a lovely thing indeed.  Almost as quick as DSG but smoother in auto mode imo. Accelerates better as well as there are so many ratios!

My first auto also. I love it. 113k and fully serviced.
I'm a lazy driver who hates changing gear at the best of times.
I think anything is prone to breaking so if it's not the gearbox that breaks, it'll be something else, but then that goes for any car. It's a machine, it'll break at some point.
Keep it serviced and chuck some love at it.
In the meantime get a DSG and enjoy!!  :driver:

Thanks for the opinions, hopefully have chance to give the dsg and manual a test drive.

No doubt I'll report back when i've found 'the one'

I currently drive a gti DSG, my second one since the first one got written off. DSG farts are addictive.    And it's suited for the lazy driver. Gear changes are smooth as hell. Id deffos recommend going for one so long as the DSG's been serviced on time. Luckily mine has had 2 services in its lifetime currently on 106k, no issues at all.  :innocent: :innocent:
Setting off from a standstill mad fun, highly recommend getting a DSG.

Ive had both and id say go DSG for a couple reasons which have been said already.
For one, it's great if you just wanna relax and let the car do all the changes for you, if you feel like being more involved you can do that too on the paddles and via the stick.
Secondly, build some insurance into your purchase by ensuring they've kept to the service regime and for peace of mind I'd get it done again once you've bought one.
Lastly, you will almost certainly modify an ed30, buying a DSG saves you the expense of putting a new clutch in (like you'd have to with a manual if you map it) and the bonus farts they make on the down shift, especially with a sports exhaust, always put a smile on your face.
