Didn't explain that very well - what I meant was does the tool go in the notch gap vertically from underneath or do you put it into the gap on the side of the hub where the locator slides down and twist it in a horizontal axis?

I tried the chisel method - that didn't get anywhere either!

I soaked it in PlusGas again and will have another go tonight. Surely mine can't be any worse than other daily driven early Mk5's? It's only got 80k on the clock too......

Put the tool into the slot in the hub from the back of the hub, then twist the tool 90 degrees to open up the slot a few mm get some WD40 in there too. I then hit the hub (Steel) with a hammer and slowly slowly it worked its way off. The tool will probably pop out or twist as you hit, stop and put it back in.

A pic paints a 1000 words.   The spreader needs to be in the middle of the slot so that it opens the entire clasp equally.   If you do it right at the bottom, the top of the clasp will still be gripping onto the strut.

Thanks fellas - yes like a proper knob I had only tried it at the bottom - in my defense I saw it like that online!
