**Fixed**Key fob went through the wash :(
« on: January 08, 2018, 10:38:09 am »
My key went through the wash the other day. The mrs didnt notice until she heard banging in the tumble dryer. Luckily we have a spare but we do use both keys so i would like to get it sorted.

So i dried it out and put a new battery in and as soon as i did, the alarm went off on the car. The light on the fob is constantly flashing without any buttons being pressed. f*cked keyfob???

If so whats the part number on the 3 buttom fobs as i cant see one on the key and is it worth getting one of the "New Genuine" ones from ebay?

Depends if the immobilizer chip enjoyed being soaked in Persil non-bio or not.   I believe that bit is part of the key.  The link is just the generic fob for the alarm/CL which can be added to the car easily enough.  The immob needs coding by the dealer or someone with VAG-Tacho or some other app, but try a new fob in the first instance.

For reference, a brand new key (both parts) cut and coded to the car is approx. £240 from the dealer.

The immo is enclosed so it should have resisted the washing. You just need to replace the electronic board that controls the buttons from a used spare key and then get it coded with you car with VCDS.

Is the immobiliser chip powered via the ignition barrel because it doesn't look like it gets power from the remote battery?
I was thinking all i would need to replace is the remote locking part because if the immobiliser chip is not powered then a soaking shouldn't matter.

I could try the soaked key in the ignition without the remote part attached but i don't want to bugger the car up if the immobiliser has been affected by the wash and potentially lock down the car.

The car doesn't get buggered if you test the key. The worst it can happen is the engine to stop after less than 1 sec. It will then work fine with the spare key.

The immo gets powered by a coil near the ignition barrel.

Great thanks.
I will give it a try tonight and hopefully the immobiliser will be ok and i will only need a new remote.

Good news

The car still starts and runs using only the half of the key with the immobiliser chip in it. So it looks like i can get away with just a new remote  :happy2:

I've seen something on youtube about pairing a 2nd remote using the 1st remote. Can this be done or do i need to breakout the vcds?

Thanks

Try this...may work

1) Unlock the door to your car using the key blade

2) Insert your old key blade into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, but do not start the car.

3) Roll down your driver's side window

4) Step out of the car and insert your new key into the driver's door lock, now turn the key to the left and hold it in that position for 10 seconds.

5) Now press the lock button on the FOB

6) Now press the unlock button on the FOB

Gonna try this when I get home. Having the same issues with my key fob.

I bought a new genuine remote from the bay for £29.99 and followed this guide and it works perfectly.

Thank you to all who helped  :happy2:

@MIJ_JAGGER

I broke the chip in one of my keys when trying to swap over to a new case. If I was to buy a new "can id 48" chip and put it in key and then follow this guide would it work??

cheers

Doubt it as that’s to do with the immobiliser, it’ll have to be coded

OK thanks for reply.

So how did buying a new remote fob as above and then carrying out procedure work then? Wouldnt new fob have an immobilser chip in.

Not saying your wrong just trying to get my head around it.
