Pilot Sport 4 or others?
« on: March 09, 2018, 03:35:04 pm »
I need to get new front tyres for my Mark 5 Golf. Looking at some of the threads, the Pilot Sport 4 look recommended, but on the tyre supplier sites they state they're for summer use. Would an alternative be a better all year solution?

If you do a search on here that tyre is highly recommended. I need to renew my tyres so will be trying those myself.
Looking at prices and saw these for delivered

Yes, a lot seem to like them - just worried now by the summer bit!

I ran PS4s all around in the winter we had. Drove fine in snow and ice, just had to be careful as always I guess.

Haven't driven with a winter tyre berfore, but from watching YouTube videos, I can see they're far better for traction and steering ability but I haven't had an incident in my 12 years of driving and I've not felt a great need to buy them.

Not trying to sound billy big balls here, just saying that "summer" in a tyre name doesn't put me off.

I too am surprised by how good the PS4 is in the cold.   The general rule of thumb is summer tyres are too hard to conform to the road surface below 7 degrees and will lose grip easily.  I've found that to be true of other tyres, but I've used the PS4 in -5 temps without any concerns, just have to take it steady as said above.

I will say though, mine are down to 1.6mm on the rear and 2.3mm on the front (rotated just before the snow arrived) and I did have some sketchy over steer moments in the snow, but that's to be expected if you are a knob driving on snow with slicks

If I had full tread, I have no doubt they would be superb (for summers) on snow.   But nothing will beat a proper cold weather tyre though.

As far as what to choose, go with the assumption all of the premium brand sports tyres are ny on equal.  Just avoid ditch finders and you're golden.

Nothing beats my old Bridgestone RE720 for all round superbness though, brilliant tyres, but were sadly pulled over a decade ago.

I had 4 PS4's fitted just before Xmas and they've been fine in the recent cold weather.

I could probably find someone, but they haven't got any PS4 on offer. Think I will use Kwik Fit, but looks like I will have to wait until Thursday for a fitting. Thanks for all the helpful info, much appreciated.

Try your local dealer.  Mine price match and are by far the best at balancing in my area.

If you got a F1 Autocentre near you they do 2x Michellin PS4's in your size for £171.70 all in. And this is for the Y rated (up to 186 mph) XL tyre.

Use the Voucher Code COMPA2015 to get free Wheel Balancing Discount and a few quid off the tyres too.

Couldn't see if they are XL tyres on the F1 site?
Also OP have a look on black circles, think they're £96 fitted. Can get 2% on cashback sites too.
