ED30 Selling Up - Gauging Opinion
« on: April 02, 2018, 11:38:27 am »
Hi All,

Not posted on here for a bit. I got my ED30 just over a year ago. It's a red 5-door DSG in good condition and replaced an Evo X FQ-330 SST.

Upgrades so far are BCS PowerValve turbo back exhaust with cat, Racing Line intake and APR ECU remap (inc Loba pump). Output is 330bhp and 350lbft torque.

Things I like about the car: 5-door practicality, DSG box is pretty good (better than the SST), much better to live with daily than the Evo, decent fuel economy, strong engine.
Things I don't like about the car: dead steering, massive lack of traction, vague front end at high speed.

I'm considering replacing it with a 2015 Audi RS3 in the summer. It retains things i like about the ED30 and solves the lack of traction, but I'm worried the steering will still feel dead and at high speed the turn in will still be poor (compared to the Evo). Obvious down sides are cost, both to purchase and run. Upsides are 5-cylinder turbo howl.

What are people's thoughts? I realise the obvious alternative is a Golf R but they are fairly common and I like driving something slightly unusual/different.

Cheers.

You can improve the steering feel and ‘bite’ with polybushing and more aggressive geometry (more castor and neg camber, no toe in) though traction will always be limited in a fwd car of this power. As always, compromises......

There are ways to improve most things you talk about but traction will always be an issue in a front wheel drive car with ~300+BHP.

I was going to say geometry, but colesy beat me to it. The one thing I'll add is that when you start to alter it's geometry to improve one thing you can make it worse else where, so improving turn in with neg camber and/or toe can make it more unstable at higher speeds for example. There are examples of a 'fast road' setup on here somewhere, if I get time later on I'll take a look about.

You say you want something not common but all most people, ie non petrol heads, will see you in is another golf or audi - you'll be lucky if they know the mark or class let alone that it's a GTI/Ed30/RS3/whatever..

The RS3 is a really nice car, lovely sound and can be remapped to near 500BHP for £2.5k - which makes it tempting also.

Another car on my list is the BMW M2 - although, depending on the new A45, the BMW drivers reputation may sway me - plus they are starting to get targeted by thieves..

I love my Ed30, mine only has a stage 1 APR map so about 290-300HP roughly.. But during the winter, whilst it starts off fun, a few weeks in with it trying to kill me anywhere near full throttle in 3rd or less, 3rd is the main gear though, I'm starting to think about changing to something 4-wheel drive also. My gaze is on the MB A45-AMG, they are expensive but they totally destroy the golf in all weathers. I took one out on a test drive last summer, with my brother driving my Ed30 and I was really surprised how much faster it was. I'm waiting for the next generation to come out, sometime at the end of the year roughly/hopefully, to see what the new one is - even if I buy a used one at that point they will be much cheaper or I can deal with the salesman to get rid of 'old stock'.

Sometimes less is more, now the summer is getting closer traction will be less of an issue.

Thanks all.

Yeah agreed - I can alleviate some of the issues with sticky tyres, geometry, roll bars, anti-lift kit etc and it's definitely better in the summer with dry roads, but I'm a bit loathe to throw money at the car when ultimately I can put it towards something else that has these fixed by default.

What I don't want to do is change car and find I still have dead steering and a vague front end!

The dead steering is even worse on the MQB platform, imo, and Audis especially have never been noted for their steering feel.  A Golf 7R is a better bet. A lot more fun than the equivalent S3.  Not sure what the differences are, but VW set their car up more playfully.

And strictly in my opinion, dear God the A3 platform is bland to drive and bland to look at. And those nasty 2 tone wheels, yuk,
