Curious case of the missing aerial
« on: April 15, 2018, 12:19:01 am »
Hi everyone,

Got a weird one here that hopefully someone can help with. I recently went exploring to see quite why I can never reliably pick up radio stations and found an odd situation. My bee sting antenna isn't actually connected to anything!

I can't see any loose plugs in the back so perhaps I'm missing something obvious? There's a similar blue connector under the rear of the headlining but that's .. connected.. so I don't really know where the aerial should be going.

Anyone- any ideas? I've got a 55 plate GTi.

Thanks
Dann.

Underneath the aerial.

The blue connectors.

Wiring along the back.

I seem to recall the first lot of mk5 gtis' had their aerial feed from the rear heated screen. Perhaps somewhere along the line a previous owner installed the bee sting aerial for cosmetic appearance without connecting it to the head unit.

Correct the aerial was in the rear glass, but was  bad for reception, so it was replaced with the bee sting at some point in the golf production run.

Hi chaps,

Thanks for that. I concur, it is indeed bad for reception.. though I think my wiring to the rear glass is duff anyway since the heated element doesn't work.

Now would be a good time to think about a DAB shark fin/headunit install :happy2:
