Both fans spinning .... and aircon problem
« on: June 18, 2018, 07:39:28 pm »
Both fans were not working , I put a live a negative power to then but they never moved
So I took them of the car today to check them. I unplugged the middle plug connecting the small fan the the big fan and thought
While they were off I put the 12v power to them individually and they both spring into life ???
So I put them back on the car.  Run the car up to temp but the fans would not come on

Turned the aircon on and both fire up now ??  Should both fans come on for the aircon ???
As Iv read only the little one should ??

The aircon is still not cold even though I replaced the sensor switch ?
Can I see anything that might be wrong with the compressor by looking at it while the car is running and the aircon turned on??

I had an issue with the fans on my Passat, I ended up telling them how to fix it.

The sensor that tells the fans to come on is actually built into the fans and is not a serviceable item, the fans need to be replaced to fix it.

What the receptionist said to me about it still makes me cringe to this day and prompted a call to the service manager ASAP to ask in no uncertain terms what the hell was going on down there. They are a long standing 'specialist' VW garage.

Care to PM me the name of the place so I can avoid it? Or at least tell me where it is in the country general area?

We still use them.

I think it was just a problem of a new receptionist operating her mouth before putting her brain in gear.

They are based in Irlam , Manchester.

Any ideas ??

Car has never overheated or gone over the 90 mark.

Sounds to me like it could be the thermostat, probably your main one. I thought my car was getting upto to 90 but when i looked using OBD the coolant was actually 79 and on a spirited drive would manage 83 so never getting upto temp. Once I changed out all my stats (I had one main one and 2 inline ones (and I changed my temp sensors at same time)) car quickly got upto to temp and OBD readings showed temps of 92-96 degrees and the fans operate as per normal (car is 2+ so I'm told higher than 90 is fine).

TLDR it could be you're not getting to operating temp. The dash gauge is woefully vague, use a VCDS or other reader (or the climate control display) to show your ACTUAL coolant temp.
