Second lnline thermostat???
« on: April 02, 2019, 07:56:27 am »
Hi all

Recently notice my gti looses heat on the motorway so im going to replace my main thermostat
I learn't on here that a manual has 2 thermostats and a dsg has 3
Now i have a 2005 manual and i cant see or find any inline or 2 thermostat
I rang volkswagan and they said the manuals only have 1 main thermostat

Anyone experieced this before?

Yes my manual GTI has only the main thermostat. I think it maybe only the later manual cars had an inline thermostat, mines an 2006.

You are correct :happy2: in thinking you have two thermostats, one is at the front of the engine, sorry I don’t have any photos to share. My 05 manual gti was running slightly below 90 degrees on the motorway and as soon as i left the motorway it would rise to 90 degrees. Changed the thermostat in the water hose, very easy as you can clamp the hose either side of the thermostat so as not to lose any coolant.

That's the electric water pump that the arrow is pointing to NOT a thermostat.

My 2007 manual also only has one thermostat.  I believe only DSGs and early manuals have 2.

@Nzgolf gti
I too have a manual 2005 GTI. I had the same symptoms as yours and yes, our cars have the in-line and the main thermostat. I installed a new main thermostat (takes about 4 hours) and all has been good since.
P.s. I’ve replied to your other post too re the mapping of your higher mileage car.

Instead of starting a new thread, hope someone can advise me.

My 06 DSG takes long to reach temp when it’s cold, it’ll stay there when it reaches.

What do I need to change? Main or inline? And is it any easy job or best to take it to a garage.

Thank you

Hello

I have an 08 Gti DSG which had the same problem which I drove 12 miles to work and it wouldn’t get passed 70 degrees and the garage changed the main thermostat on mine which cured the problem for me.

Hopefully that helps
