2005 GTI Fueling issues?
« on: May 31, 2019, 08:32:42 pm »
Hi guys,

Wondered if anyone had any ideas whats causing this.

Basically the car just cut out then wouldnt restart, it was turning over fine but never starting. After about 10 mins it started and I managed to get it started and drive it home.

VCDS showed the following faults...

2 Faults Found:
012556 - Low Pressure Fuel Regulation
P310C - 004 - Fuel Pressure Drops Intermittently - Intermittent

012403 - Fuel Pump Circuit
P3073 - 004 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent

Anyone any ideas?

Just to add, it's taken a long time to start when cranking in the past but thought nothing of it.

thanks!
Dave

Most likely the fuel filter

I did think this, but I only replaced it a couple of years ago (about 10k miles ago) , can they get blocked that quick?

Could be in the in-tank pump dying.  Worth checking the cam follower hasn't worn through as well.

will have a look at the pump.

I changed the cam follower about 2 and a half years ago, how quick do they usually wear?

thanks!

Quick question, how would I know if the problem was the HPFP or Fuel Tank lift pump? I've checked the fuel pressure with VCDS which looks OK, but that was after I got the car going again, so might be an intermittent issue.

My first point would be to investigate the 3rd fault code listed.
That could be the main reason the other 2 faults are being thrown.
Defo replace the fuel filter and check HPFP cam follower.
If all seem to be fine and still no change. Then you could have a dodgy wire or module.
Check the in tank pump pressure to the HPFP and then the rail pressure. You might find the HPFP is trying to make up the pressure in the rail.
