Edition 30 - Strange Rust Spots
« on: June 04, 2019, 10:54:28 am »
Hi guys

Recently purchased a lovely MK5 Edition 30 in Diamond Black, its in lovely condition given its age, the front wings are perfect, it does look like they have been changed in the past but around the rear arches front of the back wheel on both sides it has around 4-5 rust small "blisters" they aren't really bad and haven't broke the surface of the paint but they are very strange as they are on both sides of the car roughly in the same place, its hard to take a picture of them given the colour and the fact they are quite small

Is this common? Are they from the inside out or cussed by minor stone chipping?

Thanks guys

It is very strange, it could be slight stone chip damage and some moisture has gotten in, but its similar on both sides

The car really is in lovely condition so it isn't a reflection of how its been treated

Size wise they are about half the size of a 5p piece

Hoping it doesn't get any worse!

My ED30 in grey (5 door) has rust spotting on the rear arch at the back of the arch where it meets the bumper. VW said they would honour the 12 year rust agreement. Just need to get it to therm for inspection.

If they are small bubbles forming under the paint with no surface penetration (from a stone chip, dent or scratch), they sounds like 'zinc inclusions' to me.

If it is that (pics needed to confirm), it's a known defect during at the factory that takes years to show up.....and no it's not covered under the corrosion warranty.

My Ed30 has one or two and my old MK4 R32 had a few as well.  They haven't spread in 5 years, so I'm not bothered about sorting it yet.
