Upgrade on standard Golf mk5 Stereo, need a bit of help
« on: September 10, 2019, 06:50:02 pm »
I don't frequently make forum posts, so I'll keep it short and simple

I recently bought a 2005 1.9 TDI Golf mkV, and would like to upgrade the stock stereo for a better overall experience.
My car has only got speakers in the front, none in the back.
From what I can tell, I'd need new low-end speakers, mid range, and possibly tweeters (However I'm not that fussed)
The current parts list that I'm thinking of buying is as follows

Low end speakers (or something similar to:)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-540-WATTS-6-5-Inch-17cm-3-Way-Car-Van-Truck-Door-Dash-Shelf-Speakers-Pair/351678104755

Mid range speakers (or something similar to:)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLI-FI4-4-10cm-3-way-Car-Coaxial-Door-Shelf-Dash-Speakers-300W-Pair/270666326600

Crossover
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2pcs-Car-Frequency-Divider-2-Way-Audio-Speaker-Crossover-Woofer-Wave-Filter-200W/142504828858

And a head unit (with the right wattage), that I have yet to choose.

I apologise in advance for my complete lack of knowledge, I'm completely new to the subject.

Do you really need to upgrade the speakers? You say better experience but what do you want from it. For me the stock speakers are OK in my GTI, I'm just updating the head unit to an RNS 315 so I can have DAB, bluetooth etc. Try updating the head unit first and go from there :)

Not looked into the speaker side of mk5s yet but my previous car sounded worse after replacing the speakers, probably bad matching.

I tried replacing the speakers and it sounded worse or roughly the same as before. This was after I’d upgraded stock CD unit to RNS 510, which was an improvement but not great coming from competition grade Pioneer head units in my previous Golf.

I put the stock speakers back in, I have the 10 speakers setup so 3 in each front door, added an amp that can connect direct into the RNS and it was much better, night and day difference.
If the car was a bit newer I’d consider adding an under seat sub also, but not worth the effort now.
