De-badge Residue Removal
« on: November 05, 2019, 08:58:28 pm »
My Gti’s had a crusty hatch - Swapped it for a much better conditioned one in the sam3 colour
The replacement was a Tdi, I removed  the badges, but it has left a crystalline residue - what’s good for getting this stuff off?

Thanks for reply - tried label remover & WD40, not the best cocktail.

Its not something I have seen on any other VAG badge before - was expecting foam, this feels super hard and wont shift.
Thinking about it, its like super glue, is that normal for Mk5 badges?

Got a caramel wheel on standby

Tar remover and light polish.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Was going to suggest a caramel wheel, but be gentle with it.  You can easily over heat and damage the paint with those things!

A harsh but super quick method is EvoStik adhesive cleaner.......just try a hidden sample area first, the bottom a sill trim or something.  You never know with later VW paints how they will react, but on older VWs, I could cake that stuff on with no paint damage.

I can practise on the old crusty gti hatch - it’s still badged up
Think I’ve got some dodo tar remover somewhere in the man cave, will give that a go too

So I attacked the old hatch - took the G off, it was on with normal foam pad that I have come across on other VAG cars - I wouldn’t be posting about that stuff.

Looking again at the removed TDI badges - it seems they have used a combination of RTV and superglue to stick the badges on!

I’ve always used Isopropyl Alcohol / Rubbing Alcohol. Works pretty much instantly for me
