Suspension knock spring like sound

Just asking what a suspension top strut mount sounds like when it's worn? And how you would test one on mk5 golf.

Clonking usually over rough ground or when bouncing on front strut

Depends how goosed it is - I would say rattling over uneven road surfaces
Test by taking the weight off the wheel, jacking the suspect corner up and pull the wheel or strut and see if there is play at the top mount.
