Header/ Expansion Tank Filters
« on: February 18, 2020, 01:58:23 pm »
Guys I have 2 small plastic tubes which look to be filters floating around in my header/ expansion tank, should these be attached somewhere or is this how they should be?

Thanks In Advance
Max Amp

I'm not 100% but I wouldn't have thought anything should be floating around apart from coolant!

I could be wrong and simply never noticed, but i didnt think the tanks had any type of filter in them

I'm assuming they should be attached to the inlet and outlet ports, I noticed it when I drained the coolant to remove header that they were just loose in the bottom?
As you guys say I'd be surprised if this was how it was designed to be

Yeah that's normal.  I can't remember if they are limescale/dirt traps or water softeners but they are definitely supposed to be dangling there and not rigidly fixed into place  :happy2:

They can burst on MQB platform cars and make the coolant go all black and horrid. AND blocks the heater core.

Yeah, my ED30 has these - when I first saw them I thought they'd broken off from something, but couldn't see a fracture, so guessed they were supposed to be there. Odd, though - wonder why they're there!
