Replaced DV with a rev G

With my car being on 107k and having no evidence of the DV ever being replaced I guessed it was time to change it just to be safe. The old one which  a rev C, so I’m guessing it’s been on the car since new? Anyway, it’s in basically mint condition. No rips, tears/holes or anything. I’m absolutely baffled. Does this mean the car hasn’t been thrashed or anything like that?

On another note, the car felt a bit more pokey with the rev G. I floored it briefly in 2nd and I felt a loss of traction and the light flashed. Roads were totally dry etc so this would never usually happen. Does the rev G give a bit more boost or something?

The Rev.-G doesn't give it more boost. The Rev.G has a stronger diaphragm and likely an increased spring rate, allowing it to hold more boost is all. Without seeing before and after boost data you wouldn't know what the actual boost was being sensed by the MAP sensor. Best guess is the C wasn't completely sealing as well as the new G is now.

To be honest it was probably just in my head 😂 but the traction slipping is very unusual. Can’t believe the original has been in there 14 years and was in near enough brand new condition

Just been popped to the shop and I seem to be having some issues. There’s a bit of noise coming from the exhaust, especially when I turned the engine off. It makes a little grumble/rattle as the engine shuts off. When I got out and looked there seemed to be a little bit of white smoke coming out? Can a new DV cause this? I had it fitted at a local VW specialist so I’m guessing it’s been put on correctly etc. pretty worried, wish I’d never bothered having it swapped.

I think it’s ok. Maybe it is something to do with the exhaust, but it’s a huge coincidence how it’s only come about after having the DV swapped. I’ve seen some bits online saying a faulty or incorrectly installed DV can cause exhaust issues?

It’s a sort of fluttering sound when I shut off the engine. Bizarre

There is no way a Rev C will last 14 years.  It's definitely been changed at some point.  Not everybody documents every single part they replace.

Well, smoke from the exhaust is never a good sign, a coincidence or not.  Are you sure it wasn't just steam?

Yeah I’d be amazed if it was the original. It may have been steam, there wasn’t loads. Went for a little drive earlier and all seemed ok. No smoke etc, no rattle when shutting the engine off. The turbo seemed to be a bit louder though, but again I’m not sure if I’m imagining it 😂

I’ve not got any lights or anything on the dash, surely if there was an issue I would have?

You'd be surprised how few codes actually put the engine light on.  They normally focus on emissions and saftey related stuff for EMLs, such as dead cats and bad O2 sensors, ABS and airbag faults.  Everything else is down to the owner/mechanic to troubleshoot with logging.  The engine can run sub-optimally for years and never throw a code!

Keep an eye on the oil level and your ears peeled for strange noises.  It's all you can do really!

Well it’s going in to have the AC compressor replaced Monday so I’ll get the mechanic to give it a look over. Fingers crossed it’s nothing and I’m just being paranoid

Just one thing to add...as these age, change the oil more often. The turbo needs fresh clean oil in order to extend its life. So, 3k to 5k mile intervals per oil and filter service will help the turbo's health.
