milltek fitting
« on: March 10, 2010, 07:50:06 pm »
hi fellas. ive had my milltek cat back delivered today which i bought off a fellow member. However there werent any clamps with it. theres a local exhaust place where i can get some so that isnt a problem. does anyone know what size i will need? Also where the first section of the milltek fastens to the standard part of the exhaust does it simply slide over the old pipe and clamp up?

Hi Howard, I fitted my TBE last sunday, I bought a cat back exhaust from a guy off ebay and the 100 cell cat and dp off a guy on this forum.

It was actually a doddle, but key bits of advice are:

1) I put the car up on axle stands and wirebrushed all the bolts that needed to be undone on sat night and wd40's them all twice on sat night and 1st thing sunday before I attacked them mid morning on sunday which made a big difference.

2) I removed the cross members under the exhaust and the hanger in front of the petrol tank, which made it easier to remove the old exhaust.

3) I used loads of wd40 to lubricate the rubber doughnuts prior to removing the hangers from the rubber supports

4) Mate the exhaust to the dp then offer up the rear section and hang it and work back to the middle section, get it all aligned before tightening the clamps

5) I had all the clamps except the clamp for the dp to the cat back exhaust, I stupidly thought easy can get from halfords / kwik fit etc no problem, wrong, I went out on my motorbike for 2 hours on sunday (car on axle stands exhaust off) no one, but no one has the right diameter clamps, in may case the dp has an external diameter of 80mm, the biggest diameter I could get "off the shelf" was 67mm, useless, so I assembled without a clamp on the dp to catback, easy to buy and cheap off ebay, and for next day delivery, so best measure the main exhaust, I think it is 2.75", the dp being 3", bearing in mind this is internal diameter, so need to add at least 2- 3 mm for od which is what you need for the clamps, best buy stainless steel as you will get them off again when you come to remove when you sell the car ;-)

Otherwise was a pretty easy mod and really pleased with it.

Have fun
