The changes aren't happening until Jan '12:

There are to be some changes to the MOT test from 1st January 2012 which are being introduced in response to European Commission Directive 2010/48/EU of the 5th July 2010 and which will effect those with aftermarket HID headlights and remapped ECUs:

4.1.4 Compliance with requirements:
(a) Lamp, emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements
(b) Products on lens or light source which obviously reduce light intensity or change emitted colour
(c) Light source and lamp not compatible

4.1.5. Levelling devices (where mandatory):
(a) Device not operating.
(b) Manual device cannot be operated from driver’s seat.

4.1.6 Headlamp cleaning device (where mandatory):
Device not operating.

For anyone with a remap, section 6.1.9 may be relevant.

6.1.9 Engine performance:
(a) Control unit illegal modified.
(b) Illegal engine modification.

(by 'illegal', it is assumed that they mean changed/programmed differently from OEM specifications)

There will also be a new check on the general condition of the wiring:

4.11. Electrical wiring
(a) Wiring insecure or not adequately secured.
(b) Wiring deteriorated.
(c) Damaged or deteriorated insulation

and on the function of airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner systems:

7.1.4. Safety belt Pre-tensioners:
Pre-tensioner obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.

7.1.5. Airbag:
(a) Airbags obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.
(b) Airbag obviously non-operative.

7.1.6. SRS Systems:
SRS MIL indicates any kind of failure of the system.

Some of the above won't be popular with some around here I know, but VOSA have confirmed that the necessary changes to the MOT test schedule will be introduced and from 1st January 2012 vehicles that fall foul of the new requirements will fail the test.

I think the biggest change is that they will now be able to detect re-maps and car will fail the MOT if this is the case.

I assume that this has been brought in because a lot of people who re-map their cars don't inform their insurance company

What the.... when did this get announced...

so any car with a remap with be an automatic mot fail?

Ive read a lot on this and the general consensus is that this applies to Factory fitted Xenons i.e the regulations for new cars

Retrofitted ones still dont need auto levelling & washers - apparently!

I think this is to try and stop the HID kits that dont have the projector beams and dazzle people.

I guess only time will tell - theres been many a debate on that subject on various forums!!!

As for the remap thing, i think thats a load of cobblers. It would mean that all mot test centres would have to ECU reading equiptment for all the makes of cars & i dont see why a remap makes a car unroad worthy!!!  And imagine all the companies like revo, Bluefin, Superchips, Shark etc etc - can you really see the goverment putting companies like that out of business  :scared:

Big dicussions regarding aftermarket HIDs on Briskoda, I have them fitted in my vRS (which have projector units as standard) but as of January next year mine will be an MOT failure because I don't have self leveling or headlight washers.  There was also some piece of legisaltion found by another member which further stated that OE xenons fitted after market, even if the levelers/washers were included would be a failure, so based on that only factory fit is allowed.  I'd like to see an MOTer that could tell the difference or actually be asred to check.

Me, I will simply swap my HIDs for halogen at MOT time then refit the HIDs after it passes - not that I endorse that sort of activity......... :innocent:

The most infuriating part is they are introducing all these ridiculous new rules but at the same time looking to make the test bi-annual!!  :stupid:

Do they ping on like xenons

The pinging on is due to the bulbs. If you fit HID bulbs, they will, if you leave the Halogens in, they won't.

UPDATE on potential GB - I have a price for 3 sets (under £300 delivered)  Just waiting on a price for 10 sets, should we get enough interest.

Also, my contact tells me the original OEM Xenons are made my Hella, so these are exactly the same as the OEM Xenons in construction, just with Halogen bulbs.

Also, regarding them having a shutter (being bi-halogen/xenon). I'm not sure from looking at them, sorry. I will only know once i've fitted them and can hear the click on switching to main beam. Sorry :ashamed:

If they are xenon look, I would very much doubt they would have a bi-xenon shutter.  Hella are one of the main OE light manufacturers for quite a few vehicles.  When they make a lamp that is intended for sale as a patent part they change something insignificant for example, on the standard halogen lights the dipped beam shrowd is a VW logo, when the part is produced as a copy, they fit a lattice design to give the VW effect....does that make sense?  I had both a copy and an OE lamp, both made by Hella and apart from the logo, they were identical.

If a group buy comes up for these at a competitive price I may be forced to raid my bank - again!  :surprised:

I have found these ones for £128, Hella ones too!!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hella-VW-Golf-MK5-03-09-Xenon-Look-Headlight-Set-/160656932344?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2567e63df8

Good spot that.  Other members have these and paid £180+, although they are not a copy of an OE light they seem a good choice if you want projector units and the helis bar (can be used as a DRL) tbh I like them with black inners so would not bother.
