Powersteering light flicker (but so faint)
« on: January 30, 2021, 01:54:51 pm »
Hello, just recently purchased a 09' DSG MK5 5 door GTI with 75k.

With any used car im going through its issues.

My issue is the power steering light is on. (But so faint most wouldn't even notice)

Start the car on ignition the yellow steering wheel symbol is bright and goes out when you start the car.

Driving along I can see it flicker and goes off when I press the brake pedal. (Again faint)

I've checked the alternator and its charging no problem. Brand new Bosch battery fitted today.

Wondering if anyone could help?

Thanks

Might be answering my own post. Scanned the car. Found the following:

00885 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal 50 : Electrical Fault in Circuit
00883 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal S : Electrical Fault in Circuit
00884 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal X : Electrical Fault in Circuit
01744 - Ignition Switch Terminal P (D) : Electrical Fault in Circuit

These are the most common symptoms of ignition switch trouble.

Car Fails to Start. One of the most obvious signs of a failing or faulty ignition switch is if the car won't start when the key is turned. ... Key will not Turn. ... Vehicle Stalls. ... No Noise from the Starter Motor. ... Dashboard Lights Flicker.

The most common cause for this is the Ignition Switch (Electrical Portion).

Noticed when i have the left indicator on... the engine management light flashes in the same sequence. When i press the brake pedal at stationary the steering wheel light goes on and off as i press the pedal.

I've never had that fault but from your posted information my approach would be:-

I would replace the ignition switch as the earlier post indicates it's failing.

However, I do not think that's the answer to your instrument cluster lights - I would remove and refit the cluster to start with and check the wiring harness for and chaffing or any connections to it - then I would look the brake switch and test that with VCDS in measuring blocks and lamp bulbs fitted for the correct pin type as I've had crazy faults with incorrect lamp bulb force fitted!
