RNS 510 hanging/non responsive
« on: February 22, 2021, 12:06:31 pm »
Hi all, I went to my car the other day and my RNS 510 no longer works. Sometimes it comes up with the Radio, but no output or response to touchscreen (touchscreen works during update process so not a cable issue) or buttons and sometimes it goes to the enter code screen. I've tried the various button combos to reset it and still the same. I've then tried (after a few false starts with EcuOrder.txt error) and managed to successfully upgrade the firmware from 5238 to 5274 but after I take out the disk when prompted at the success screen and it does the final automatic restart it still does the same.

Is this the dreaded MPEG issue (not sure what it is, but appears some chip needs re-flashing?) or could it be a faulty HDD?

Would @Shoduchi or someone else be able to shed any light on this I wonder?

Thanks

Stu

If the upgraded firmware didn't solve, you can have either have a faulty HDD or a faulty mainboard. I really don't know. You can try to re-install the 5274 firmware, or make a SDD clone and upgrade the internal HDD. If that doesn't solve it, I can only suggest you getting another RNS-510 or send yours to a repair shop. I think all parts are available on ebay.

Hi @Andy It was hung on 5238, I successfully upgraded to 5274 and it was still hung.

@Shoduchi Good idea, I'll see if I can find the old HDD I took out shortly after I purchased it.

An update on this... it was the MPEG (DVD Decoding) chip that had failed. This was caused by a jump start I did from one of those battery packs, I sent the jump starter back to Amazon and am never using one again. I also think it is the cause of the intermittent Haldex fault that appeared around the same time.

That jump start will end up costing me £160 for an RNS 510 board replacement and £150 for the Haldex repair.  :sad1:

Ouch!

I got rid of my RNS510s years ago as my phone satnav is just far superior, as is the audio quality tbh.
