GTI Stage 1. Dyno'd 274HP worried this is too much
« on: March 31, 2021, 11:13:49 pm »
Recently had a GTI stage 1 remap. They did a dyno and the result was a whopping 274HP at the wheel. This is about 35 more than I expected and has me a bit worried.

It pulls proper nice but my worry is about the clutch life, brakes, and general health of the engine. Also should I change the oil for 5w40?

For extra background, I have a RAMAIR oversized induction kit, and replacement cat-back exhaust with resonator delete.

The work was done by a genuine tuning garage using a well known tuning product, not just some bloke down the road. I will post a copy the dyno result soon as they email it to me.

Am I worrying over nothing?

Your car should be on the high side of stage 1 range due to inlet and exhaust but would suspect it is just a ‘happy’ dyno overreading by several percent. Yes, you should run 5/40 next time you have the oil changed.

Should I be worried about the stock turbo or the stock clutch? I read somewhere that the k03 turbo is only rated for 300hp which I assume is measured from the crank. My 274hp is measured at the wheel which translates to over 300hp at the crank. Is this right? Should I be worried?

I think I might get an independent Dyno done to check the power.

274hp at wheels sounds way too high for a stage 1 k03.
On YouTube the lad HampshirePhoto has a stage 1 mk5 and his was 250hp crank on a Maha dyno

On a Maha dyno my stage 1 edition 30 (k04) was 310 hp at crank 234 @ wheels

If you have access to live data do a full throttle run measuring maf g/s then divide your max maf reading by 0.8 to give a rough idea of crank power , mine gives around 249 g/s = 311bhp at crank

Not quite that much.  The K04 can only flow enough for 330hp.  And that comes from Borg Warner themselves.

Rolling roads are merely a tuning aid to measure changes.  The numbers they churn out are usually nonsense when it comes to remaps.

The only way to accurately measure engine power is to remove it from the car and strap it to an industry standard rig.   There are too many variables when the engine is turning a gearbox, flywheel, road wheels, brakes and a heavy roller + the dyno operator fudging the coast down numbers to turn a customer's frown into a smile.

I read that lots of things can impact a Dyno score. Lot least how tightly the car it strapped down.

Either way I had a call with the owner of the place that did running and Dyno. He says we were told wrong, and the 274hp figure is at the crank not the wheels. He will be in on Tuesday and will send us the graphs then. I feel less stressed now.

Indeed, wheel spin is another factor.

Another factor is gearing.  Gearboxes are torque multipliers, which is exactly why measuring engine power at the road wheels is dumb.

Anyway, 274 @ the crank is very healthy for a K03  :happy2:

Where did you get your map done from?

Thanks
