Engine query
« on: April 10, 2021, 11:06:25 am »
Something happened yesterday with my bog standard Ed30 that hasn't happened before and I haven't clue what it might be so looking for any help on this.

Acceralating away from a roundabout onto a motorway in 5th gear (and not being silly with the right foot) the engine revs went mental at about 3500rpm shooting right up towards 5000rpm before dropping back to 4000rpm and settling down again. There was no corresponding increase in road speed so I'm baffled as to what could have caused it. It happened again when I planted the right foot in 6th gear to get past a slow coach who finally pulled into the left hand lane after miles of sitting in the outside for no reason. It wasn't as extreme as first time but a definate rise in revs between 3500rpm and 4000rpm but no rise in road speed. Only way I can describe what it felt like was if you had dipped the clutch momentarily. It all happened at motorway speeds.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My guess is either your clutch packs are on their way out or your gearbox TCU mechatronic unit is on its way out.

Sounds like clutch slip to me. Flooring it in higher gears puts the engine/flywheel at a massive torque disadvantage and therefore the clutch more likely to slip if it's worn.

How many miles has the car done? Does it only happen in 5th and 6th gears?

3500rpm is exactly the strongest torque zone in an ED30, so I'd say clutch as well.

Unusual for a standard car to rinse the clutch though, assuming of course it's A) a manual, as DSG doesn't slip except when the engine is stupidly modified, or B) the clutch isn't fubar.

Thanks for all replys. Car is manual and mileage is 55k so I wasn't thinking clutch at that mileage but what you say re peak torque does point to clutch. So far I've only noticed it in 5th & 6th gears - I tend to use the torque in the lower gears having driven VW/Audi 2.0 TDIs for years so have got used to bucket loads of torque at low revs -  revs are generally kept below 3000rpm in gears 1-4 as I'm quite a lazy driver!

A bit strange for the original clutch to wear out by 50k but it’s not been unheard of, depends how it’s been treated over the years. New clutch and DMF time.

I've seen cars with 30,000 miles have clutch issues, due to being mostly driven in stop start city driving. Even less if the car is high powered & tuned.

If it's slipping in 5th and 6th it's properly had it.

I've only noticed slip in 4th up a steep hill at 3500rpm, and that was after a remap.

For a standard car to slip in 5th/6th @ 55K, someone has either coated the friction disc in KY jelly, or some pretty sh1t clutch control has occurred over a long period.

As useful as KY is for solving friction related issues, I'm waging on the latter.  Some people should just take an automatic test and spare the public who possess brain cells of the torturous sound of mechanical abuse.
