Torque Figures - Spring Change
« on: April 13, 2021, 04:21:46 am »
Hi can somebody please either supply me with or point me in the right direction for all torque figures required for replacing front and rear coil springs?

Thanks
Max

Front:

Top mount bolts = 15nm + 90 degrees.  Arrows on top mount must face North/south on the vehicle. Always use TT top mounts, GTI ones are rubbish.
24mm Driveshaft hub bolt (if it needs to come out) = 200nm + 180 degrees.
Drop link nuts = 65nm.
Strut pinch bolt = 70nm + 90 degrees
Damper rod to top mount nut = 60nm (always use an OEM 21mm shouldered nut, not the sh1tty generic B&Q grade ones that come with aftermarket kits)
Tie rod (if it needs to come off) = 100nm, loosen, re-torque to 100nm.
Ball joint nuts (if they need to come off) = 20nm + 90 degrees.

Rear:

18mm bolt/nut control arm to knuckle bolt = 60nm + 90 degrees - at vehicle ride height (jack the knuckle half way up it's travel, then tighten fully)
Damper to knuckle bolt = 100nm - as above.
Damper rod to top mount bolt = 25nm
Top mount to body bolts = 30nm + 90 degrees

If in doubt, always give it 3 ugga duggas, plus 5 more ugga duggas.

Don't forget to disconnect the front and rear control arm yaw sensors (if xenons fitted) before wrestling with the springs and dampers.  Break those and you'll have a bad day and some ABS fault codes.

All bolts with a degree must be replaced, or you can be a cowboy and chance it

Where I've said 'if it needs to come off' depends on the strut length.  With OEM and/or some aftermarket sport struts, you will need to remove more stuff to give you enough clearance.  Most coilovers just need a drop of the top mounts and pinch bolt and off you go, dead easy.
