Passat hubs - GTI tie rods?
« on: May 19, 2021, 08:10:24 pm »
Folks,

Just fitted Passat front hubs with a bunch of other stuff. I've noticed the track width difference and that there's a fair bit more thread exposed on the tie rods than before.  When I snug it all up it seems fine but it's nagging at me. Is everyone else running standard GTI track rods with the alloy hubs and, if so, I assume your tie rods haven't disconnected catastrophically at speed?

Cheers,

Harry

Just done mine the other week with passat hubs and wishbones. It does increase front track width by a few mm so yes the track rods need adjusting. Had my alignment done after and put some hard miles on and had no issues. Not heard of anyone changing them to suit before.

Is there still plenty of thread in the track rod end ?

Thanks for that, that's reassuring. As a sanity check I looked at the parts catalogue and the passat and golf share the same tie rod part number so should be fine as you say.

I'm not actually sure how much thread is in there as I had to adjust it with the wheels on as it looked like the wheels were toe-ing out pretty badly with the tie rod adjusted to the old position - either way it's in for an alignment this afternoon so will ask them to double check. Stupidly I didn't measure the total threaded length of the tie rod before I put everything together so measuring the exposed thread length is meaningless at this point.

It proper threw my front toe out drove like a bag of dicks on the way to the alignment centre lol. Ignore the rear toe, bolts are rusted out so got to replace them and get it sorted lol.

Ah, so you have exactly the same issue I have then haha. That's really good to know, especially that you've done some hard miles on it since. Ta.

Yes I'm fully expecting the bag-of-dicks driving experience on the way to the shop. I'll take it super easy so I'm sure I'll be holding up all the Honda Jazz's/Nissan Micra's, maybe they won't enjoy a taste of their own medicine.
