Finding a used K04 help
« on: December 02, 2021, 06:13:14 pm »
I need some help/advice for upgrading to a K04.

So my original plan for my mk5 GTI was to have everything ready for a stage 3; intercooler, fuel pump, clutch etc. I’ve already got all the parts ready to go.
But just do a stage 2+ for now, see how I get on, then if I want more bhp I’ll wait until next year when I’ve built the funds back up a bit. Then go for a new K04 kit which usually cost £1500 or more.
I spoke to my local tuner Autotune today (Northern Ireland) and he made a good point that it’s waste of time paying for a stage 2+ and then paying the same again for another tune,  if I decide to go stage 3. He’s replaced K03’s with used k04’s in the past and never had any problems.
So now I’m on the hunt for a k04 without the £1500 price tag. Any tips on finding a good used one? If I find an ed30 being broke, what do I ask for? I’m guessing there’s lots of pipe work etc I’ll need, not just the turbo? Does it have to be from a ed30? Or can you use any K04’s from any S3’s or later golfs? I’m new to this, as you can probably tell.

Have a look at R-Techs website, they have a guide.

Not worth chancing a second hand turbo when K04s can be had for £750 brand new, not recon.

Not saying ALL used turbos will be knackered but cars and engines usually end up in breakers yards for a reason.

That’s very tempting indeed, there’s also reconditioned turbos on eBay for less, but I can I just pop that turbo in instead of the K03 or do I need to go and find all the other parts from that R-Teck picture,  as well? The guy from Autotune said to “make sure the turbo comes with DV etc” but I have no idea what the etc means.
He also said that I’ll need S3 injectors.
Has anyone had their turbo rebuilt? Ive found one on eBay that includes everything I need but the seller mentions there’s play in the turbo core. If I can get it for really cheap, then get the turbo rebuilt, it might actually save me money, and I’ll end up with a good as new turbo.
