What is weird though is my TDI has the same brakes as the GTI, but are considerably sharper.  Need to try and suss that one out at some point!

Different MC sizes to counter the boat anchor diesel?

Pretty sure it's the same 23mm as MK5, but I'll find out.  It's probably more to do with the fact it has a 3rd of the GTI's mileage on it

Is there a replacement caliper carrier that works for the MK5 GTI?

In other words, retain the caliper but fit a bigger disc and a carrier that spaces the caliper out to accommodate the bigger disc. Would be super easy, you wouldn’t even need to bleed the system.

my 986s have passed 4 MOTs so  :happy2:

From the post above, it sounds like they are a good fit. Not that I’d trust an MOT to tell you if they weren’t!
BBS CH 18 x 8 et50 with forge 11mm spacers

Cheers Terrier that's pretty close in spec to my wheels so it seems I'm going to need spacers if I want these calipers, a shame as i'd be rubbing hard with spacers that big, and I'm 99% sure my insurance said no spacers (Brentacre)

Probably better off saving some money and just getting decent pads and discs like Vagbremtechnic J hooked and Ferodo DS2500.
