Brake fluid change

Hi all,

Due a brake fluid change, plan was to buy 1500ml VW brake fluid and get my local mobile mechanic who i use to do the change. Then i came across this thread which talks about activating the ABS/ESP unit via VCDS.

2 Questions,

1. Is this absolutely necessary?

No, not entirely necessary - but it will give the best results.

Only time I would say it is really useful is if the ABS pump has been off the car, the pump activation will clear out air bubbles a lot easier than traditional methods.

Thanks, i might not bother this time then. Do you know how much fluid is needed, 1.5l or will 1L be enough?

Yeah it's mainly for bleeding a replacement ABS pump.

If in doubt, a quick and dirty way to agitate the ABS pump pistons is to just go out and lock the brakes up a few times.  This will shift any cruddy fluid built up around the pistons/valves etc ready for when you bleed the brakes.
