What maintenance to do next???

I have just bought a 2006 GTI with what appears to be 20 000 km on the clock. Its from Japan so these ridiculously low k's are common. Problem is I cant be sure if much maint has been done over the last 17 years. Question is what catch  up should be done. Timming belt first but probably not the idlers and water pump???If anyone has any experience with what to do next please let me know

Do the idlers and waterpump whilst doing the belt, stupid not to. Other than that I'd do new air, fuel, cabin and oil filters and oil. Check the hpfp tappet, maybe change the coolant and brake fluid.
If it's running fine then I wouldn't touch anything else.

All fluids (engine and gearbox oil, coolant, brake fluid!) and filters, then cambelt, water pump and tensioners. Everything else should be ok if it's been dry stored, maybe a set of tyres if they're old.

Time AND/OR distance on consumables, so at 17 years, 100% do the cam belt.  Get rid of the tyres and brake pads as well if they're that old!  :grin:

You can verify the mileage in the engine ECU if you have VCDS.  If not, buy it immediately, it's essential for these cars.

The chassis bushes will be past it as well.

This is the thing about low mileage cars. People are attracted to them because of less wear and tear etc, but anything rubber and plastic related rots out in the same way as a high mileage car.  Just because a car has sat for years doesn't mean it doesn't need any maintenance  :smiley:

OK so I got a full timing belt kit Pump tensioner and idlers. It also came with a tensioner stud 8mm. Do I change this as after 17 years its probably well seized or just leave it alone?
And of course all fluids to be changed, had problem finding the power steering reservoir?
Will have a look at bushings while I'm under the car and decide what looks tired

If your original is in good condition then I wouldn't bother changing it.
