Cam belt or chain?
« on: October 10, 2023, 11:43:25 am »
Just booked my GTi in for cam belt and water pump next Tuesday. They then rang me back up and said it's not a belt it's just a chain? It's the AXX engine but I can see belts and pumps for sale online, and I swear the previous owner had the belt done as I saw it in the service history.... anyone know who's right or had there's done recently??

Cheers

Yes, as mentioned, it has both. The belt in front connects the crank to the exhaust cam. True, it has its own pulleys and also drives the water pump. The chain in back connects the two cams; and allows the VVT system to adjust the cam position via the adjuster attached to the rear of the exhaust cam.

I'd be looking for a different garage TBH.

I think some mechanics can only see the belt that's holding their beer belly in place.

Couldn't agree more, seriously take this somewhere else this just gives me a bad feeling. AXX will have both belt and chain, my tensioner snapped at silly MPH and had no idea what the diesel noise was, I actually thought it must've been another car and then soon I realised it was my car! Got lucky with that one but it was the first two weeks I owned it so I was pretty p*ssed. Take care of them and they'll take care of you (for the most part )
