Dsg repairs - Milta Technology in Bristol?

Having spoken to Milta today, I'm still trying to decide on what to do with my car..
Options are ;
1. Thought about booking it in somewhere and have a 2nd hand dsg box fitted probably looking at around £1200 with labour & recovery costs and no guarantee that it's ok.
2. Take it to a gearbox specialist for them to fix the mechatronics and also replace the clutch packs & probably the flywheel given that car is on 140k. Thanks going to be around £2800 all in with recovery so not cheap.
3. Sell the car as is. Not what I really want to do tbh as I love it still after 7 years.

Has anyone else used Milta for dsg repairs? They seemed to know the score on the phone.

It’s most likely the solenoids on the mechatronics mainboard… The most common being N215/N216 solenoids…and if one of yours is worn/failed it can’t select gears properly. If you decide to replace it you change both solenoids. Changing the valves might solve your problem (N215 / N216). Only buy genuine Borg Warner no Chinese or other brands.

I’d be trying this first personally… before changing the whole mechatronics unit for another… it’s my understanding that the mechatronics unit needs to come from same make and model of car otherwise it will require coding. Before buying any parts remove and check your mechatronics board physically for any burn marks or obvious damage…because your issue might be electrical…then you will need to change the whole mechatronics unit.


When you call a gearbox specialist or garage they don’t want you coming back complaining if they pick the wrong issue. So as a precaution they will want you to replace the mechatronics board & clutch packs together.

You don’t need to change your clutch packs or flywheel unless you have clutch slip or chattering from the flywheel your issue is the mechatronics.

You will need two solenoids… they unscrew from the board very easy. Then you will need new DSG fluid, filter, belly pan gasket, DSG sump o-ring, perform adaptations reset via VAGCOM software and checking the DSG fluid is at correct level.

Here is an handy website to check also for common 6 speed DSG issues. You could also email the guy on the webpage with your fault code… he will point you to the issue possibly better than me.

I've read your thread the other day actually, very informative.
Trouble is that I'm no mechanic so have to pay to get this sorted. I think the clutch was slipping as it goes, really noticed it the other day when doing a 3 point turn on a slope when the car ran quite a way back before drive kicked in. That was really noticeably worse than ever before, used to creep back slightly and thinking about it it's maybe slightly worse.

Your car will feel like it’s dragging because of the failing solenoid it can’t operate the clutch packs smoothly.

Fair enough on doing the labour…Easiest solution is to source a MK5 mechatronics and swap over… hopefully it talks to your cars ECU without it being needing reprogramming.

Also make sure it’s from a GTI not the diesel DSG cars or other variants. Different gear shift points.

£2800 sounds a touch steep.  I could be wrong but I'm sure the mechatronics can be replaced in situ like a traditional slush box auto?

I'm sure the mecha pack was about £1500 from VW, but that might have been years ago  :grin:

Given the potential cost of replacing bits and your unDIYness, you might be better off with a used box from a low mileage car.  6 hour book time to drop and refit a box, so the labour for that might work out cheaper than fiddling with the existing box.

That's why I did that with my manual. Rather than buggering about rebuidling the crusty old worn out original one, I scored a MK6 GTI box for £250 instead from a 45K car and it was perfect :smiley:

If you like the car, the investment is probably worth it rather than starting over, as that's faff plus the risk of potentially buying a lemon.

£2.8k is all in with mechatronics repair, clutch packs and flywheel while gearbox is out and recovery & return to collect which will be nigh on £500 I think.

I did contact another place and to fit a new mechatronics was £2900 +vat.

2nd hand box is another option but that's a ball park 1200 - 1500 with no guarantee if it works ok, one place has said u can fit a later scirocco box I think they said and get it coded in. Not cheap that option either lol.

I'm still looking at all the options...  :scared:
