Yes I checked the oil level and it looked fine above the minimum. It came on last night when I was driving so I'll have to check now when car is cold.

Is there any issues with what oil goes to top it up until I can get it changed? Obv it'll be the correct stuff for the car but other than that??

Thanks for your help guys
..........mine did the excact same thing. After stopping & checking it was above the min level.Topped up to the max mark & it's been fine & never came on since. :happy2: Don't worry about it just top up.

i use roughly a liter of oil every 1200miles :scared:

^^^ VW's 'tolerance' is 1000km/621m per litre.

Off hand, I'm sure I've topped up about 5 litres in the 20 months/13.5k miles I've had mine.

^^^^^ yep i know how they can say it's ok to consume 1 liter of oil every 600 odd miles is feckin ridiculous, I've never had to even top up a car oil before the gti, that's 20 liters of oil between services what's point in servicing them ? If it's getting near enough a full oil change every 2.5 k, vw need to get there act together and at least supply us all with free oil for life !

yea mate smelling the fumes, is this not just on start up ? After 5 mins and a few revs I find it disappears ?

I've just topped up with around 1 litre... I guess it's ok since I do push my car a bit when I get excited.

Right oil level checked, it was sitting bang on the min level so not too bad.
Erm - horse manure!  Oil on the minimum is VERY bad.  On the GTI, you are basically running with 25% less lubricant - how can that be 'not too bad'?!?!

When i got the car it had some Mobil1 oil in the boot. I'm assuming that it was probably used by the previous owner so i have topped up with that.
Make sure it is the correct type of Mobil 1 - only Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 is suitable.

This Lifelong service plan, its an Awfully time between services!!
It may seem long - but when used correctly (which means diesel engines, and being driven without being caned) - it is perfectly OK.

That is an EXTREME limit of oil consumption - and is usually on apparent on new engines.  Once the are run in, and properly run in (like 10k miles), then oil consumption should start to dramatically reduce.

If it still drinks a litre of oil every 1000 miles after 10k miles, then it simply hasn't been fully run in.

Sorry to intercept this dipstick-tugging thread!  But having read what you said Teutonic_Tamer on one of my posts re; Quantum Synta III 5w30 not being 'as good' as the Castrol equivilent, I have actually ran out of the Synta III, and in case I need to top up between now and my next oil change, would I be right to assume I could use a Castrol Edge 5w30 oil to top up? Or is it not worth mixing it with the Quantum until I do a full oil change?

Basically, I can only get a 5L bottle of Quantum so if I have to go down that road I might as well buy 5L's worth of SLX and do another oil change...

Thanks mate,

Sean

There is no such oil as "Quantum Synta III 5w30".  The only Quantum oils which have similar names are:
  • Quantum Synta 10w40 semi-synthetic - 505.00 approved - so for diesels only
  • Quantum Synta Z 5w30 semi-synthetic - NO VW approval - Ford use only
  • Quantum Synta ED 0w30 fully synthetic - 503.01 approved - only really meant for B5 RS4s and 225 S3s/TTs
  • Quantum LongLife III 5w30 fully synthetic - 504.00/507.00 approved - the latest oil spec - but no 'Synta' in its name

So which one are you using?

would I be right to assume I could use a Castrol Edge 5w30 oil to top up? Or is it not worth mixing it with the Quantum until I do a full oil change?
Mixing oils causes no problems at all (unless you have some very rare castor based oil - which is generally only used in 2 stroke racing karts).

Basically, I can only get a 5L bottle of Quantum so if I have to go down that road I might as well buy 5L's worth of SLX and do another oil change...
How soon are you due an oil change?

My mistake! I was looking at the Quantum Synta bottle I used on my previous Ibiza Cupra TDI  :ashamed:

It's actually Quantum Longlife 3 5w30 That i've used, last oil change, about 2k miles ago.
