HELP - EPC warning light come on
« on: May 09, 2010, 07:08:05 pm »
Hi all
I'm hoping some of you knowledgable lads will have an idea what this is.

Just been on a run up to Manchester about 200 mile round trip. On the return leg I stopped only a few miles from home and when I restarted the light come on.
The car seems to run fine with no problems.
I have had a look on the internet and there seems to all different opinions.
Any help gladly received
One thing I did notice is that the fuel on the run seemed to disapear quickly but I think that might be in my head as it still read 37 mpg on the display

Any ideas please chaps

Get someone with VCDS to scan your car.

Mine came on out of the blue. Drove the car and it seemed fine for about 3 days. Scanned it and it turned out to be a problem either with the fuel pressure sensor or the pump. Given the car was working fine, I booked it into VW to get them to have a look. Unfortunately, before the car went in, it randomly cut-out at 40mph. The sensor had gone.

But it's a general warning light so unless you get it looked at, either by VW or by VCDS, I would recommend you get it into VW ASAP, and try to avoid any lengthy journies or try and avoid being in a situation where if your car stops working, you're stuck in the middle of nowhere!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I've seen that on a few posts about the brake light switch.
Do the brake lights still work when thats the fault???

My brake lights seem ok

best to get it plugged in mate, what year is your car? it may just be a `check sum error` and need a software update.   mine did something similar to yours around a year ago and needed an update.
Still Here!

The cars a standard 56 plate with 29,000 miles on it.
What is a 'check some error' ???
Fuel pump sensor seams to be a common fault for these symptoms??

You really need someone with vcds to scan the fault(s) if you don't want to take it to your dealer.

Whereabouts are you?

It is completely pointless anyone speculating why you have a light on your dash.
It can come on for a multitude of reasons so you need it scanned by someone with VCDS or your dealer.

Up until then it is pure guesswork.

There is a list in the VCDS section of people in your area that have it and are willing to help.

Re: HELP - EPC warning light come on - UPDATED!
« Reply #13 on: May 10, 2010, 05:11:57 pm »
Hi all
Had it plugged in and the error code is P0601 (control unit faulty)
Seems to tick over very slightly lumpy and when error code is taken out seems to pick up and tick over normal (that may be all my head as I know there is a problem).
When you turn off then back on again the EPC light comes back on and after 2 or 3 start ups the EML comes on as well.
Car still runs fine
Anybody help please.
Got it booked in next week for some invstigation work but could be new ECU at worst.

Interesting that.

This may help.

Where are you in the country? Has the car been mapped?

I would suggest someone like Ben @ Shark Performance might be able to help.
