I had to get a second opinion when I saw it had done 276,000 MILES!!....I thought I was reading it wrong.

I just wondered if a GTI was capable of doing that mileage?

....Definitely capable if it's well maintained and serviced. VolkswagenDRIVER magazine have a Mk4 GTI which has done 246,000.

Garth.....Sub frame problems??? All cars require Maintenance & Servicing...

Do you mean the cost of this or are you not happy with the car in general...

I must admit I think the MK5 is quite well put together..... however I have only had the car a few weeks.

Time will tell...It's still concerning with all your care & money you spend on the car that you don't think it will cover another 75k  :surprised:
Yes, Are you not aware of the mk5 clunking sub frame problem? Do a search, it's well documented. As is the worn steering rack issue. These are both above and beyond normal maintenance and servicing.

Everything is relative, so if you are coming from something like a citroen then the mk5 Golf probably does seem well put together. However, it is not as well put together as a mk4 Golf and the quality of some of the parts is a lot lower. This is not my opinion but something VW were critised quite heavily about when the mk5 was released.

Overall I still like the mk5 GTI, it's still a pretty good car- it handles well and is fast out of the box plus I really like the shape and styling. My problem is for a company that use 'if only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen', the truth is somehting different.

My car is hardly a high miler and it is treated very well and never thrashed, yet the list of faults gets longer each week and they seem to be cropping up faster than I can solve them at the moment, particularly annoying rattles!

All that said, my engine does still sound and go like a new one (even if the check engine light is on yet again), it's just the rest of the car that's ageing prematurely!

32k 07 plate here
probably not the thread to moan about vw build quality but got to agree with some of the comments here.
My golf has had a failed air con compressor, drinks a bit of oil too. Then the cambelt needs doing next year.
I had a focus st170 prior to the golf, did over 100k in it, never used a drop of oil or let me down. Cambelt was 10 years or 100k!
I'm yet to be convinced by the perceived quality. I'm not knocking vw but I think vauxhall, ford & co are closing the gap.

The other brands may close the gap but they cant get within a million miles of the vw customer service. Its expensive but well worth the extra.
18k service on my vauxhall vivaro, £229. oil, filter and tyre kick. This took 2 days. They said it needed new pads and discs (it still doesnt, now on 41k)
they also put the van on a 2 post ramp and squashed the sills flat, left the coolant cap off and broke the under tray  :sad1:
You cannot get courtesy vans from vauxhall even though they are business vehicles, it appears you must put your business on hold whilst servicing takes place!!!

20k service on edition 30 oil, pollen, brake fluid change £259 they gave a VW keyring and mug for free and i was given a courtesy vehicle for 2 days while they found a rattle also get free coffee every time i visit dealer!
I also have experience of ford dealers.......

Back to my point......57 plate Edition 30 on 25k  :happy2:

I bought the car Feb '09 at 28k miles and it's not a kick in the arse off 40k miles now... an '06 plate for me.

Re: the perceived quality issues that are being discussed - it's all relative. My last three cars have been two FIATs and a Hyundai, so the fit and interior finish is a world apart from what I'm used to.

I'm not so impressed with the arsey and sometimes downright arrogant VW dealers, silly spares prices and the endless 'Check Engine' warning lights.

Still, I suppose the acid test would be, 'would I buy another VW/VAG car?'       (R32 or S4, please)

Yes, in a heartbeat.  :happy2:
