How to stop the dealer scratching my rims?
« on: June 24, 2010, 08:02:09 pm »
Its tyre change time and i'm a bit apprehensive to where they have been booked in  :rolleye:

So I'm thinking of watching every move they make - Sting?? Anyway anyone got any bright ideas advice on this?

Ive been bitten before and ended up in a right battle with the dealer who claimed it was not them despite them parking it with the wheel touching the kerb :fighting:

Check the car with them before you hand in the keys and get them to sign something on the worksheet to say it's in mint condition.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

When you drop the car off get the desk guy to fill out one of the condition forms where they walk the car and mark any dents, scuffs etc on a diagram of a car.

Why are you taking your car to a dealer to get them changed.  :chicken:
I would go to a place that sells alloy wheels and tyres, as they know and understand about protecting the rims.
When i got tyres fitted to my works wheels my arse could have sucked in a small village, but the guy said dont worry i do this all day long. He then put them in the tyre fitting machine clamp thing, upside down. so the face never got touched.  :happy2:

Its through Black Circles and I am taking them to a Vaulhall dealer as its the closest/probably best round here. They have a good reputation but I am the kind of guy who will notice if they scratch one :rolleye:

i had my Vredesteins tyres fitted last week, and i went to an independant tyre shop to have them installed as they couldnt get any Vreds , so i purchased from Camskill.

Two tyre fitters, i watched both, one was carefull with the tyre lever ,placing a plastic plate on the alloy face to stop damaging removing the old tyre, the other, what should be described as a YTS tea making lad, just got the tyre lever, without any care on the alloy, and prised off the tyre, against the my precious gloss alloy, i jumped in, and said to him , do you mind using the plastic plate so you dont carve chunks off my Red rim please. He then after cusing under his breath, went and put my alloy on the car with a Windy gun!!!, without even using a torque wrench. That was it , i went spastic to put it lightly. :fighting:

You have to keep an eye and make aware the Party thats gonna carry out the work , that you expect to have the wheels and car in exactly the same state as you give it to them.

Sorry , made my P!ss boil :fighting:

Oh and the tyre pressures where at two different pressures, one at 38 psi, and the other 34 psi.

Hi Bodger00,

I’ve just had my ED30 in for new tyres. Went to Protyre in Poole (Manager called Jon), they spent 2hrs hours putting on new Michelin Pilot Sport 3’s. I politely explained, a couple of days earlier, that I suffered from OCD and would not tolerate any scuffs whatsoever.

My wife dropped the car down to them and waited (and got very bored) and finally it was ready.

Ace job, no marks. no scuffs and they even apologised for taking so long... even though they were heaving with customers at the time.
I even got them to fill them up with nitrogen for £3 a pop.

Loving the Michelins, really glad I ditched standard Conti 2’s when they were worn.

Always sensible to get recommendations from other petrolheads before anyone works on your ‘beloved’!

Cheers... Hotrod :happy2:

My neighbour works for a local tyre place - their machine doesnt even touch the alloy face when taking the tyre off. There was a wheel that runs round the sidewall breaking the bead and popping the tyre off. Then it changes angle and removes the tyre. I watched on in amazement!

I had 2 new tyres fitted to the peskys and fessed up to the guys doing it about my fears..They had a giggle at 1st but then invited me in on the process. They explained the machinary had parts that would,nt scratch the alloy and the 2 lads removing the wheels spent so much time removing them I thought I was paying them by the hour.

I have a local tyre fitting place that does all of our tyres when customers ask us, but they have scrateched a few rims when the tyres have been a pain getting off, but they do it for free for us so cant complain.

I took my 19" BBS wheels to Hi-q to get the new tyres fitted as they had been freshly refurbed and didnt want to use the above company incase there was any problems, Hi-q put deep gouges into 3 of the wheels and ruined the finish

They tried to deny it was them but it clearly was, have just won a case against them and they are paying me £400+costs  had them refurbed yesterday by 'the wheel specialists' and they have done a fantastic job.
